Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 question

I am working on my NV4500 so I can sell it and have a quick question for those who have worked on them. Is the rear main shaft bearing supposed to be a press fit? My book doesn't seem to say. It does not talk about using a puller to remove it so I am guessing it's not a press fit.

mainshaft bearing

I've got my mainshaft out right now. That rear bearing is a press fit. I have the factory manual and it shows their special puller to remove it as well as a special tool to install it. Got to see my Snap On man tomorrow.

Are you sure the rear mainshaft bearing is a press fit? I have the '98 dealer service manual and I can't see anything about pulling that bearing (it talks about puller setup and precedure for all others). All I see being pulled in that area is 5th gear. Under heading "MAINSHAFT AND GEARTRAIN REMOVAL" on page 21-58 step 5, it says "Remove rear mainshaft bearing", it says nothing about using a puller. I just want to be clear on this. I'm thinking this bearing is a slip fit and that the press fit of 5th gear and the retaining nut serve to hold the bearing tight.

It is a slip fit. But there is a plate that's bolted to the back of the transmission that holds it in place - not the 5th gear. Once you unbolt that plate the bearing cup will slide right out. That's where you install shims to set the proper amount of endplay on the mainshaft.

Steve, I know the bearing cup is a slip fit held in by the plate but is the bearing itself a slip fit on the shaft also? I was hoping you would chime in because I knew you had been through yours.
