I know 5th gear loss is a common problem but what about 4th?

A friends 94 just lost 4th gear, still has 1-3 and 5 but sounds terrible in all gears. 4th is compleatly unusable. Anyone know what the issue is?

Also, will a NV4500 from a 2001 bolt up to a 94? I understand they are the same transmission, but what about the clutch/flywheel assembly?

He can get a NV4500 from a wrecked 2001, but wants to use the southbend out of his 94. will this work?

The only posibility I can think of is the input shaft may be larger in the new one. The shift towers are also different so he will have to use the newer shift lever.

All Dodge diesel NV4500's had the same input, 1. 25” x 10 spline. The mainshaft and tail housing are different for 4x2 and 4x4. Check the lube level in the bad transmission. Sometimes the aluminum tail housing on a 4x4 cracks and the lube leaks out. Standard Transmission of Fort Worth TX (800-std-tran) offers a strong cast iron replacement tail housing.

The output main shaft is broken under the forth gear synchornizer. Their is a snap ring grove there and it's a weak spot.
