Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 Tail housing crack

I was looking at my aluminum tail housing and on the inside I found a hairline crack. Should I replace the whole thing?

You sure it's cracked? There are a lot of casting flash marks on these aluminum housings that resemble cracks. I though mine was cracked as well in a few places but after various, hard off-roading miles it was not and never leaked. You'd be surprised just how strong these aluminum housings really are.

Yea, Im going to have that crack checked out. I was going to replace it with a cast iron housing but quad4x4 doesnt recomend that.

Well its not the fact that it is cast iron, but that they are made overseas and some are not machined to the correct specs. He has it on his website or you can call him. I ordered one from him that was machined correctly. He also has aluminum ones you can buy.

Replace it.

I had a bad leak on my NV4500, but the source of the leak was not distinguishable. Lot of towing. Not a lot of fluid, but made a mess all under. Turned out to be a hairline crack on that housing, only leaked when hot.

Dropped transfer and replaced it, an EZ task. Went back with aluminum. Has not leaked since.

Yea I already ordered the cast iron housing. He didnt say they are all bad but he has found many machined wrong. If you go on his website he has a ton of info on the nv4500 and he really knows his stuff.

My' 91 CTD donor with a 4500 conversion had a cracked tail housing (heavy NP205 mounted to it) and had been repaired at least twice. It held oil and didn't leak, but I think I'd replace it rather than repair it.
