Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) NV4500 temp sensor install

Where is the best place to mount a temp sensor in the NV4500? I need to monitor the temp while towing grades, don't want to overpower the trans. I was surprised when I happened to touch the case after a long grade haul, outside case must have been at least 180F, burned me quick.

I have mine mounted in the driver side PTO cover. It is easy to mount here because you can take it off and do your mount on a bench. It also gives you a good reason to change fluid. Randy

Randy - did you weld a half coupling to the PTO plate for the sensor? Any issue with clearance to countershaft gears? I'm not sure I can use driver side, as I have Geno's trans filter PTO plate installed.



Also - those who have temp sensor - what are temps running?

I just drilled and tapped the cover for the sensor. My temps run in the low 200's during the summer while towing( if my memory is right). I don't think it will really matter if you use driver or passenger side cover. Randy

Good time to go with coolers. Come pre-tapped for temp sensors.

Coolers would be nice, but are pricy for sure. If I knew temp was high enough to need them, then it would be justified. Manual trans rebuilders have told me there are no heat related failures with the NV4500 as long as you are using the proper fluid and fill level, so purpose in gauge was to tell me I have a problem with the trans, not thinking a cooler was necessary.

What HP and load gets into areas that a cooler would be justified?

The Trans Coolers from Geno's Garage are a good fix to keep temperatures down and provide a port for a sending unit. Also use either Castrol Syntorq or Torco RTF as they help keep the temperature down. Standard Transmission (800-std-tran) offers a PTO cover with a fill plug in it. The plug could be replaced with a reducer bushing and the electrical sending unit.

Thanks for the input, Joe. I should have thought to call Standard Transmission. They have rebuilt this trans twice, great bunch of guys.

Regarding the fluid, Standard Transmission recommended that I switch to AMSOIL from Castrol Syntorq, due to the loading with my HP and wt, I didn't think it would effect the trans temp. Has anyone had any experience with the AMSOIL and temps?
