Engine advice...

Trade 89 D350 Diesel truck for Ramcharger

Wow this section is awsome... all kinds of great info...

Ok I have seen several people talking about running a NV4500/NP205. Which NP205 transfer case do you need to find to bolt to the back of a nv4500?

I guess there would be different spline counts on the; Std and AT NP205 cases? are there different spline counts on the std/at/2wd/4wd nv4500

Basicly looking for some scraps of info to try and piece together...

Thanks!

Luke

A few answers........

M715, I used a NV4500 from an early 98 3/4 ton CTD Truck and an NP205 from a 92 (5 speed Gertrag) 3/4 ton CTD truck. The output shaft on the NV4500 is the same size/spline as the NP205 I used. I also used the 'coupling' from the NP205 to join them together, and as far as the cases go, it is a direct bolt-together. There is a seal on the output shaft of the NV4500 that you have to remove in order for the coupling to slide in, but several sources told me that is ok to do. I am running the same brand and weight oil in both the transmission and transfer case, just in case there is any cross-contamination. The seal on the input shaft of the NP205 should be sufficient to prevent that from happening though.

CrewcabDiesel has converted a NP205 from a gas rig (smaller input shafts and main bearings) and posted the part #'s and procedures to do so, if you are interested. It appeared to me that the cost of doing this was more than what you could pick up a used CTD NP205 case for, but I rebuilt mine completely, so there was probably about the same costs involved.

I do not know if NV4500's used with gas engines had smaller shafts and/or bearings, so I'm not much help there. A NP205 from a 89-93 CTD W250 or W350 is what I would look for.

www.drivetrain.com will sell you the bracket for the T-case shifter relocation. I had to use one because the NV4500 I used originally had a NP241HD case, which shifts off the drivers side.

Hope this helps a little... ... ... ... . good luck.....

Hey M715!:)

A few of us First Generation Brothers have made the conversion to the NVG4500HD on our "W" series trucks. The new NVG4500HD bolts directly to the existing NP205 w/o a problem.

Like Hutchew mentioned... . If you're using a NP205 out of a First Gen it shouldn't be a problem as long as the NVG has a 4X4 tailshaft.

Also, Check w/ Quad 4X4 (406)446-2427 in Roberts, MT. for advice & NVG/NP conversion parts & bellhousings. Ask for Dan... He's a great resource for these conversions!

Cool I know what I'm looking for now; a NP205 from behind a Gertrag 5spd.

Something in the back of my head says that the automatic np205 is a different spline count then the gertrag np205...

I'll post what my conversion is here shortly... I think I'm getting an engine today:D

m715, when you do find a 205 make sure it comes with the coupler housing, mine did'nt. cost me over $400 for a new one.

Took delivery of a '95 CTD engine last night:D

So many things to do now... I'll have a bunch of parts FS/trade and always more stuff I'll need.

Watch the papers for wrecked trucks they can be a great source for parts...

Here is a couple of interetings ads I saw, I don't know anything about them:

1989 250 AT 4x4 cummins TD w/plow frame $2700 Howbill Auto Parts 716-593-4074 (from the pict looked like a light front end hit)

1984 Dodge W350 pickup, 360v8 4x4 AT PS PB over $6. 5k in reciiipts, needs some work $1850/bo 716-374-9127 after 5pm (would have a nice pair of axles)

They are out their just watch and wait... it took me over a year before I found the right deal.

Coming to SD?

Well, if you were closer, I could hook you up. I have a 205 from a '91 CTD Getrag 5 spd. I don't plan on converting to 4wd, so it is available. Only problem is getting it to NY. I have toyed with the thought of going there on Christmas vacation and volunteering some time, but I don't know if they are in need of help yet. I work for a small municipality as an engineer and would look to help the local government somehow. I didn't plan on driving though.

As for picking up a CTD, I got mine from the local dealer after I mentioned that I wanted to find one. They were working on a very used up 4wd truck and the estimated repair bill was more than the truck was worth. I paid the bill for the estimate +$300 or $850. Now you know how low the price on the 205 might be.

ok here is some news on the nv4500 to the np205 talked to enterpise engines to day he said that he has swaped the input shaft on the new 205's ( did not have to change the bearing or have the case machined) talked to standard transmitions today he will call me with the price of the input shaft said it would be chepper than mopar

Control Panel

I am from Fort Pierre, South Dakota. I thought I had it on my user ID, but somehow it isn't. I really dislike it when others don't put where they are located, so I will try to revise it. I did have them change my user name for me and it might have gotten lost then.

well standard transmitions fell through on the input shaft back to looking still I did get nv4500 updated 5th gear and shaft for $385 not bad no that George

Dang wish I was closer but SD would be a long road trip:) and I'm sure shipping would be a killer...

Sounds like you found a NICE deal on that truck!

I do have a friend out in wyoming...

Were busy here, I finally convinced the old man to put up a garage and if the weather holds will have it up this winter... that means some place to work on my truck and try to put the cummins in!

We just got down moving the OLD 1 car garage back about 120'... man was that interesting, a bare 2WD 3500 cummins chassie took the weight with the suspension blocked and rolled back and even steered not to bad to go around a big stump:)

Spilling the Beans

I guess I can spill the beans on this one. I have gotten the deal of a lifetime and I don't want to ruin it by bragging. This stuff usually happens to the other guy and not me.

Not only did I get the truck for $850, it has a dually flat bed on it that the current offer is up to $300. Just wait it gets better. The truck has nearly new Firestone ATX tires on it. My dually needs new rear skins, they are the same size. Then yesterday, my buddy "Super Goob" calls me and says that the garage that I got tip from needs a main shaft for a Getrag and that the factory one is over $1000. They were wanting to buy mine for around $500 if it was good.

I already have the NV4500, it was free!!!! It was in a '96 W250 that had a dump box added to it. When they installed the power take off they used regular/non-synthetic oil in it. It developed a wierd deal where you could put it in gear and then pull it back into neutral, then it would start moving in the direction that it was last placed in gear. The insurance company paid for a new trans and there wasn't any core on the old one. They were going to toss it. I have it partially disassembled and should be done with it soon.

These trucks need hydraulic slave and master cylinders. I got mine for free!!! A truck was taken to a dealership to have an update kit put on it to keep the plastic line from burning on the exhaust. It was a recall thing. When they got the thing in it already had the update on it so they had an extra kit. They were going to toss it also.

I hope you guys don't think I am bragging, because I am not. I am trying to show how being in the right place at the right time works. I am truly blessed to have friends that work at the Dodge dealership. It also doesn't hurt to live where the truck to car ratio is about 1:1. I hope this is inspirational rather than demoralizing.

It must be nice all my good deals end up costing me more nv4500$800 with updated nut get it sshipped to me open it up it has the new nut but its to late shaft is allready bad 205 from 89 cummins $200 know I find out the auto and stick is differant

I know how it goes, and you're definately not bragging...

I don't have the "hook ups" when it comes to trucks, but I have put together some CHEAP cars... I see my vehicles as "zero maintenence" because I can fix them with my eyes closed (fox bodied fords are ALL I've driven/owned for the past six years), and replacement parts are cheap/free... need an engine? if I pay $200 for a good running engine, I feel like I got bent... need an alternator? hmm, I'm still pimping that Autozone lifetime warranty from 5 years ago! ;) (you get the picture)

but on the truck? well, it's a whole new world... I'm not used to spending "real money" on automotive stuff, but I just HAD to have a cummins!!! :D

I can only hope that some day I'll have the kinds of connections with these trucks as I do with my car stuff! :)
