Put the transmission filter kit for the NV4500 on my truck 45k miles ago. Thought that I would share a picture of what it looks like now.

If the oil in the jar behind the dirty filter came out together I would say you have something going wrong in your tran's. I change my oil every 50000 and it comes out a little AMBER colored. In the 50000 miles 70% of them are with the truck and trailer at 16000 pounds. Not real heavy but not empty either.

Shifts fine, pulls fine, stays in the gear I put it in, no funny noises; time will tell I guess. My GCVW is usually around 21k. 190k total miles. Clutch has 90k on it. If it chucks it's guts out tomorrow, this trans. doesn't owe me a dime.

What type of fluid are you using?

Everything I have read says that it required GL-4 full synthetic and is considered a "lifetime" fluid.

I put in Royal purple when I did the last overhaul at 230k.

It is typical for the Castrol Syntorq factory-fill lube to turn black over time. I like Torco RTF lube. Although rated GL-6, it has not attacked the brass synchronizers in my manual transmissions. Torco said that it wouldn't cause any problems, and they were right--for example, at 124,000 miles there were no lubrication problems with my NV5600 (see TDR Issue 67, p. 84)

The fluid is in fact Castrol syn-torq, I bought it from Quad 4X4. If I remember correctly there was a comparison of transmission lubricants in the TDR and Castrol had the least drag of the bunch or something to that effect. Didn't you write that article, Joe?
