$35 kits are available for fixing it. Unfortunately it takes a special tool to install the nut, and a LONG, LONG cheater bar to apply the 300+ ft. lbs. necessary to get it tight.

With the truck on a lift it only takes 20 minutes to have the rear cover off the transmission where you can get to it all.

www.enterpriseengine.com can fix you right up, if you're near there. If you had a location under your name, people in your area would see where you're from, and post on here with offers to help, or a good shop near you...

That's a repair. You want a cure?:D Holler at Daimler Chrysler. All of us with 5 speeds would like to see a cure, too. :D

OK I live in a cave what is the 5th gear problem? I have a 99 with a 5spd and haul a lot of large loads and have had no problems out of the trany but you guys just scared me. :(

Tell me Please:)

I have had it happen too

I had fifth gear fall off this last june. It happens without any warning, acts just like it slips out of fifth, and you can't find it back. Don't be afraid to drive it home, or even to the shop to get fixed. I had mine transmission rebuilt by Zumbrota Gear, in MN. They rebuilt my transmission with new bearings, syncros, a fully splined mainshaft, and fifth gear with a special locking washer that goes behind the spanner nut. They say this is the secret, even a fully spline gear and shaft, it will still come loose over time. They dyno test all trannys they rebuild and have a one year unlimited mile warrenty. They are one off the best companies I have ever dealt with, I dropped my transmission off on a friday night, and picked it up on saturday at noon, they also have rebuilt trannies for exchange and new modified trannies for exchange or sale. I would recomend them to anyone. They mostly do OEM rebuilding and manufacturing, the two guys that run it drive a bombed Cummins and a PSD, they know their trannies. I have had no problems with mine.

5spd 5th gear problem

DarrellB,

The problem with the NV4500 is the 5th gear nut. The main shaft is not splined for the entire gear. Excessive vibration and engine lugging while towing especially cause a great amount of vibration which will loosen the nut that holds 5th gear on the main shaft. This problem has been reported mostly on 98. 5+ models, but if you have a NV4500, you are not immune.

I was told by the dealer when I bought my '99 3500 5spd that there had been an improvement made and it should not be a problem. Yep, I did my homework and knew about the problem prior to buying my truck. I think I scared the dealer a little bit.

From what I have seen and heard here on TDR, it should not be a problem for you if you do not lug the engine while towing in 5th gear; keep the RPMs at 1600 or above, or for big loads or hills, drop her down to 4th and stand on it. I have over 93,000 on mine so far and have not had a problem, but it happens with no warning... .

Hope this helps and sorry for the long post. If I misstated anything fellows, please chime in. :D

I had www.enterpriseengine.com install their fully splined shaft a year ago, excellent work.

This year I had them install a larger input shaft at the same time they installed their bulletproof competition clutch.

Nice thing about them is they own and compete with their own Dodge Cummins, not just work on them. They know what works and what doesn't.

NV4500

My 99 5 speed lost 5 gear @ 47000 miles... . had it repaired in Calgary, Canada... . New updated nut... . and it just failed again @ 56000. Most of the miles are towing... . but my fiver only weighs 9400... I am in discussion with my Dodge dealer... he says maybe

the company [don't know if he means NV or DC] might help. I know about Stand Xmission but not sure they are the answer either. Any helpful comments. BTW this is my first post after 3 years as a member.

Thanks guys and I will try to keep from lugging it too hard in 5th gear will a load behind me. I now I've lugged it down a couple of times without a load but always try to keep the rpms up when towing.

Thanks again

NV4500 TSB

My 99 nv4500 failed @ 46000 and was repaired... new nut kit... and failed again @56000... ... . I asked my dealer to get some of this repair paid for... . Dealer just phoned ... said there is a TSB

and even though I am out of warranty... DC would pay half... they will do a new 5th gear and nut kit... and they claim I should not have any more problems. Bottom line... I pay $350
