Well I think something is headed south in my trans. I went a little over a week ago to the Simpson County KY pull and won the 2500/SRW 3500 class.

Next week trans starts making noise 1/2 way to work or home (little less than 20 miles). Sounds like something smacking up against the shifter at first... but I checked the floor and nothings rubbing anywhere... sounds like its come from the trans. Well once the trans gets good and hot... . almost before I get to work or all the way home it starts making a binding noise?

Today I pulled the PTO covers on both sides and spun the drive-line to check for any damaged gears. I could not see any damage at all?!

Well after calling Cousin Billy @ BRC Diesel I decided to pull the driveshaft and check the snap ring on the back of the Transfer case. Well... the snap ring was fine... but I over stretched/bent it trying to put it back on. So now my truck has gone from making noise's to being down till I can get another snap ring on Monday. #@$%!

Anybody had any experience like this? I know its hard to diagnose from just trying to explain it, but I'm hoping somebody has some suggetions of any time. Right now..... its not looking good. :(

Mark...

Have you checked the transfer case chain for wear?. They will cause noises like your having and create a binding problem if they are worn.

What shape is the carrier bearing on the driveshaft in,excessive wear or being worn out will cause noises from it also.

Binding could also be a bad ujoint. Too many scenarios to cover here and if they have not been changed in a while and your pulling you could have stressed them also.

It also could be a failing bearing on the bigger input shaft for the clutch. I know of a few that have failed over the years for one reason or another. It might pay you to pull it the rest of the way down just to be sure..... Andy

Thanks for all the idea's Andy. I wish I know it will probably require a full tear down, but I have nothing else to drive at the moment. Luckily I have friends (neighbor's) who can help (and my wife only works part time/bitter curse till now) so I can get around for the time being without my truck.

Hopefully tomorrow I will get a new snap ring from my local dealer, and a new carrier bearing from the auto parts house. The carrier bearing is probably long overdue to be replaced, but I don't understand why it would make noise after driving 5-10 miles and not all the time.:eek:

Mark. .

One thing I have learned through the years is with rotating masses one never tries to figure out why its doing it,you just try and stop it.

I would bet money on the carrier bearing not being bad, unless you see alot of play in it or the rubber is shot, but a bad u-joint would do what your describing to a T. While you have your driveshaft out I would check them also for freeness and binding.

If you still have my number feel free to call if you get to stumped and who knows maybe the old man can help some,LOL... ... Andy
