I could not get transmission to shift into gear while engine was running. I had been on my way to work, and had to stop at a light, about 1/4mile away from shop:mad: . It would not go into in any gear. finally shut off engine then it dropped into gear. Shifted kinda hard after that, what should I look at that might be the cause of trouble?

After searching some of the older posts, I think my situation was similar to some of them with a bad clutch. Is there a way to check the clutch without pulling everything out ?

Well, when I worked for Audi, we drilled a hole in the bell housing to inspect a portion of the clutch. It was in a recall. I did the same thing with my NV 4500 once to inspect the reason for noises in the clutch area. You cover up the hole in the bell housing using an electrical conduit cover cap and if you are really concerned about trash in the area seal it with some silicone.

What it sounds like to me is that you have the needle bearings from the pilot bearing on your clutch plate. If that is the case talk with Dan at Quad 4X4 and get an update to a sealed bearing setup. I have done mine and have never regreted it.
