Truck is a 2000 2500 4x4. Transmission was rebuilt 60,000 miles back to replace 5th gear problem. Now the transmission will not go into reverse, even with truck rolling or engine off. Forward gears act normal. I was lucky to get the truck home. I'm not sure where to turn next, since I am new to the Des Moines Iowa area. Any ideas about where to look for help or what may be wrong with my transmission? Is there anything I can do for diagnostics with the transmission still in the truck? Thanks, Dave Pratt

Had trouble out of my 01 , I would put it in reverse before I started the truck, also I replaced the hydraulics and fixed the problem, hope this helps, Monte

Monte, This seems to be a different situation. I can't get the truck into reverse under any condition - engine off or running - It acts like something is blocking the shifter from finding the reverse slot if that makes sense. When I shift it from 5th into neutral it won't go any further down to reverse.

I'd say the tabs have fallen off the fork or the lug has an issue. Either way, the top has to come off. I don't think you can do that without pulling the transmission.

I'll pull the console off and have a look but I think you are right. If I remember correctly, the shift lever and its mount will come up through the floor but I don't think the top can be removed in the vehicle. I'll keep this thread posted. Thanks for your responses. Dave

I've located a mechanic familiar with this transmission. He is going to pull it out next week and check the top shifter components. I'll keep this thread updated.

Diagnosis as follows: Top shifter components badly worn (original top was not replaced when trans rebuilt and has over 300k miles of use). 5th and Rev. synchros need to be replaced. I'm also having clutch replaced while we're in the neighborhood.

I'll give the final results when we have it done.

Dave

Final results: Replaced transmission top with new shifter components, rev. synchro and gear, also new clutch components. The truck now shifts better than it did when I bought it 10 yrs. ago. In hindsight, this problem had been creeping up until it just wouldn't go into reverse at all. Mechanic did a great job.
