I have a nv4500 with a cracked tailhousing on my transmission and was wondering how hard it is to remove and replace? I am fairly mechanically inclined. 1994 ram 2500 4x4Oo.

If all you need to remove is the tailhousing it's easy. First, drain the transmission oil - it'll all come pouring out when you remove the tailhousing otherwise. You'll just need to pull the driveshaft which on your truck I think will just be the bolts at the u-joint at the rear and then pull it out (protect the front yoke from damage when you set it down and mark the joints at the rear with paint before you take it apart so that you put them back together the same). Then remove the t-case by disconnecting the vacuum lines and the vent hose on top, disconnect the shift linkage on the drivers side, disconnect the front driveshaft at the diff (mark the joints so you put it back together the same too), then there is 8 nuts that hold it to the transmission at the front - a half moon wrench helps a ton with a couple of them. Then the t-case just slides off the back back of the transmission. I leave the driveshaft connected to the t-case so that I don't have to mess with removing those bolts and I just pull the t-case off, set it on my chest and then roll out from under the truck (on a creeper). Then the tail shaft can come right off - I think it's 4 bolts that hold it on and at least on my truck they are 10mm 12 point bolts - I've broken a few sockets getting them off so have a couple laying around. Replace and then reassemble.

Will there be any needle bearings or anything trying to fall out when i disassamble the tail housing? I am going to go ahead and tackel this job otherwise. Thanks for the info steve!!!

Nope, nothing to fall out at all - the tail housing is just a cover. You have to disassemble the shafts to get any bearings falling out.

TailHousing Replacement

I went ahead and tackled this job, it was a piece of cake. Thanks again for the great instructions Steve!!!Oo.

Wow Steve,
