I have a 94 ram 2500 4x4 with 220,000 miles on its and when i shift into third gear it grinds as it goes in, does this mean i have a bad synchronizer? If so how hard is it to replace the bad parts?
Does it grind up-shifting from 2nd or down-shifting from 4th? Mine grinds when I downshift into 3rd. Upshifting is smooth as silk. I find I can downshift without grinding if I go from 4th to 2nd then to 3rd or if I downshift slowly at @25mph. Been like this since I put it in @125K miles ago.
how hard depends on your experience and access to some of the special tools.
Transmission alone is about 200 pounds and is real pain if your doing it in your driveway. Once its out you need access to gear pullers 5th gear nut etc... The service manual gives very detailed instructions on how to do it. I have the technical ability but the lack of tools has caused me to save a few bucks by pulling out the transmission myself and then having someone else fix the inards
