NV5600 bellhousing question / problem

Bought a cheaper NV5600, in good shape and only 36K original miles, 2004 model, that was in a bad wreck. The trans appears fine but the backing plate and the bellhousing are both badly cracked. Found a new backing plate, and foudn a semi-cheap new OEM bellhousing for the NV5600 online for aobut $170 before shipping. Anyway, when I took a look inside, looks like the front bearing cover for the 5600 is integral with the bellhousing? So it looks like it could be a PITA to swap the bellhousing on it? I don't want to mess anything up if there is something to mess up, and I have a good tran shop that I use that is familiar with it. But I would rather save the $$ of course. can anyone describe whats under there?



Also, strangely, more than any other trans, a lot of people have said "taht bellhousing is integral" to the NV5600, but it is clearly a seperate piece that is alum while the tran case is cast of course.



Any advice?
 
OK I answered my own question by searching a little harder in archives this time. Looks like the bellhousing is integral, but still removable, so "yes and no" to my own question...

But here is my next question. I am a very reasonably compitent mechanic but when it comes to tran I don't want to screw anything up. Is a bellhousing swap easy enough and hard to screw something up (other than the obvious, dirt and crub inside and generally trying to keep everything / the main shaft in place)? Or is it something I should leave for the pros... ?



Also, as far a I can tell, looks like the NV5600 uses the same synthetic fluid the NV4500 does as well?
 
The NV5600 uses Synchromesh, a 5w30 weight oil... the NV4500 uses 75w90 gear oil...



There is a long thread about this in "products"... I just had a bad experience with Royal Purple Synchromax... going to try RedLine MTL tonight...

In order to replace the bellhousing you have to dismantle the whole transmission starting from the tail housing. All of the guts are stacked on the bellhousing and then the main transmission housing is lowered down over the gear train and then the tail housing is set on. There are special pullers and gear train handlers needed to work in the NV5600. If you have a shop manual take a look in there.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of "bad experience with Royal Purple Synchromax" did you have?



Gear oil is one of my interests.



My last fill in my NV-5600 was with a high quality fully synthetic (MTL-P) from a boutique oil company called Specialty Formulations.



I found this company on BITOG (bob is the oil guy.com) in the gear oil forum.



Frankly, I did not notice much of an improvement in the shifting quality of the NV-5600. Just a slight improvement.

Whenever a housing is badly cracked like that, there's a possibility of bent shafts (especially the input shaft), damaged bearings, and even a distorted main housing. I don't want to scare you, but try rotating the transmission by hand, and shift into all gears to check for any jamming, or rough feel. Check input shaft for any evidence of damage, including its bearing.
 
I have a 30 day warantee on it starting yesterday. It appears everything is in good order as far as I can tell, no weird shifting and goes in all gears... Bad news about it requiring a tear down. That sucks... I thought I would be able to salvage the bellhousing but it is way too far damaged. . Doh!
