On my truck I have around 32,000 miles and it seems around 50% of my shifts catch on the way into gear, my clutch pedal is always to the floor and it has done this since day 1 but I figured once it got a couple of miles on it the problem would go away. WHen it catches it just feels like it slightly grinds on something but more or less it feels like ithits something on the way into gear. ANythoughts on what is up or is that just how they all are?

The NV-5600's do seem to be rather "notchy" in the way they shift. Especially, in the lower gears (1st & 2nd).

If you haven't changed the gear oil, you might try that. Pennzoil makes a compatible gear oil that should satisfy your warranty, & it's cheap. The paart# is 3501 & I was able to find it at $4. 99/qt.

The last time I changed it, I used a boutique gear oil from a small company called Specialty Formulations (part # MTL-P). I did notice an improvement in shifting quality but, only a slight improvement. Some people, with other stick shift transmissions notice rather dramatic improvements. I believe that the NV-5600 is just so large & heavy-duty that nothing is going to allow it to shift like a BMW. This thing is a truck transmission and it shifts like a truck.

BTW, Red Line MTL has been used by some NV-5600 owners with good success. Again, you will probably not notice a big improvement, in my opinion.

While you are under the truck, you may want to consider installing a trans. filter, available from Geno's Garage. Just a thought.

Hope this helps.

I actually switched it at 30K to that 5W30 Amsoil. It did it witht he factory fluid and the synthetic it never truthfully improved shifting quality for me.

Mine shifts hard and catches going into gears... I have 55k on now and still no improvement, considering changing fluid in the next month or so... actually changing everything...

Not that I'm complaining, but it just isn't like driving my dad's 99 with the NV4500 either... that transmission, even with the wide ratios, shifts sooooooo nice.

I also attribute it to being a medium duty transmission in a "car-like" light truck world... it isn't going to ever shift quick or smooth like a car, but a car transmission isn't built to withstand 600+ ft-lbs of TQ either... I also drove large medium duty trucks and it shifts the same as they did too.

I don't understand the difference, but my transmission shifts like a hot knife through butter most of the time. Sometimes when my clutch master cylinder/slave cylinder is acting up, it will be notchy when cold.

What I have found is that I just need to shift at the right speed. Not engine speed, but the speed at which I pull the shifter from gear to gear.

If I go too slow, it will catch. If I go too fast, it will go in smoothly, but effort certainly increases.

I have changed out the fluid with Mopar MTL both at 15k and 30k miles. Shift quality does improve after the change, but I don't notice a "lack" of shift quality prior to the change.

I think the Mopar MTL is a great fluid, just overpriced.

I am getting ready to change mine to the Redline MTL when I install my filter kit from Geno's. How much do I need to order to fill to capacity after I install the filter kit???

Thanks

I've had mine for a week or so now, and it has less than 2,000 miles on the engine/NV5600. I've noticed this too on occasion and have tried to see if there is anything I'm doing to cause it.

I think it doesn't like fast shifts, so that seems to be one factor. Another is related in that when shifting faster I notice that the RPMs are spooling down faster so it may be harder for the syncro's to catch up. And, finally, when shifting more quickly I have a tendency to be easing pressure on the clutch about the time it's catching.

I don't think it ever happens when I'm a little more deliberate with my shifts.

Perhaps this'll give you a few ideas?

Good luck,

Mark

NICE RIG!!!! :D

Man, I would love to have a HPCR in an suburban. Sure my girlfriend would love it, too! I've got to look into that.

NV5600 are like that. My transmission acted up from day one. I testdrove the G56 and then the NV5600, I placed ALL my bets on the NV5600 because of it's thoroughbred heredity. I am very happy with my NV5600 although it acts up on me every once in a while.

I have driven other CTD NV5600 equipped trucks and have found them to be very similar. . if not, exactly the same.
