You'll notice that the old one has a 1/2" thicker flange where the starter mounts. With all the research I did I missed this part. The new transmission bolted to the old adapter and I had reused my old starter. When I went to start my newly rebuilt engine up for the first time
Nothing
After doing lots of head scratching and checking things out we discovered that the starter drive wasn't reaching in far enough to engage with the South bend Cluch and flywheel kit that I had installed. I ordered a new adapter from Cummins for an 08 6. 7 as that was what the trans was for and then had to pull the rear drive shaft, the t case and trans, the clutch and flywheel and put the correct adapter in. There was a week well wasted
I tried to see if I could use a different starter as that would have been a lot quicker, but no such thing exists. The 6. 7 starter wasn't any better, so I had to bite the bullet and pull every thing apart. I did end up using a 2nd gen starter as I not only had a new one but it uses the old style mounting for the wiring. The 03 starter uses a stupid plug for the small wire. Not only is it on the block side of the starter where you can't see it but the release clip fills up with dirt and then you can't unplug it or even get at it to clean it out easlily.
The old ( 03) starter with the plug and the new( 2nd gen ) with the small stud.

Yes it means the small stud is on the lower side, away from the block but it's a lot easier to change. Of course I had to modify the wiring. What else is new.
See the little plug in the bottom left of the picture? That's the part I cut off the new wiring harness that I bought from Dodge to use for the back up light switch. The rest? File it in the spare parts bin as none of it is needed for this job.

I still have to shorten my front drive shaft but it needs rebuilding anyway and I can live with out it for the summer, even in Canada :-laf. When I went to lengthen the rear one I ended up having to replace all 3 u-joints and the center bearing as well as re-tubing both pieces because there was a dent in the rear half. More $. Shadrach
