I mentioned one of our customers in a thread about the 5600... . Since I've always been interested if I ever needed one, they shared with me... . what Tom mentioned above... that the torque path through the transmission in 6th gear when towing is a troublesome issue... . and 5th is much safer... .

Also mentioned in another thread is that an extra quart of oil (correct oil) poured into the transmission through the shift cover adds to the life of this transmission by adding additional lubrication to areas that are not easily covered... .

Got my Reman yesterday and installed it today. So far I am impressed. It looked like new, came with all the holes covered or plugged, wrapped in plastic and securely fastened to a pallet. It had the rebuild date sticker and a Mopar Dyno Tested sticker as well. Some oil ran out when I removed the covers to install the Fast Coolers. Everything inside was lubed. This is the complete opposite to the jobber one I refused to take. I have only drove it a little but it seems real good and shifts okay, getting better as I was driving around town. I used the Mopar manual transmission oil for warranty reasons. The Redline MTL does not have the MS-9224 spec on it and I was told this would void the warranty. In my situation I think the Reman was my best option as I do not have easy access to a good rebuilder such as Standard or Blumenthals. The warranty was another deciding factor as we hope to be "snow birding" a lot and a break down like a transmission on the road can be costly.

I am interested as to how many failures are related to heavy towing and turned up engines. What are you guys doing when you are towing at higher speeds, running in 6th or pegging the governor in 5th? Has any one checked mileage over a period of time to compare towing in either of these gears? I am also wondering if the Redline MTL was protecting the gears as much as it could have. Some of the reading in the TDR talks about a cushion effect that some oils have. Maybe it is better to use an oil that would do this as compared to an oil that improves shifting qualities.

I should have a short towing trip this weekend to go harvesting and if I can get access to the net I'll report on how it worked. My next month will be on an 18 speed with some big power in front.

I'm not a petroleum or mechanical engineer so I always assume the engineers know more than I do and had good reason to prescribe a certain lube for my engine, transmission, or differential. I ignore the bold claims of snake oil vendors and use only the recommended fluids.

I towed extensively in sixth gear with my '01 HO/6 spd w/3. 54 gears and only downshifted to fifth gear when engine rpm was going to drop below 1600 rpm or couldn't maintain speed on a grade which was rare occurence. The NV-5600 lasted 302k miles and it was not sixth gear that failed when it needed rebuild.

I still haven't had time to take mine apart. I bought mine with 18k miles on it. It had just had the oils all changed to amsoil. At about 55k I changed to penzoil synchromesh, supposedly what dodge used to begin with. (I also am a believer in using the recommend oils) it shifted harder immediately. I won't be using this agian.

I had a smarty JR on level two for about a month I could tell the clutch wasn't going to take it. So I switched to level one and left it there until it craped.

On the way home stock setting 5th gear 55mph I lost about 1. 8mpg with an empty gooseneck. It will stay on stock from now on. The truck is almost always loaded and doing 3mph over the speed limit. I don't think the trans can take it behind this motor 373 were another mistake. When I bought this truck I wanted an 02 model. On the trucks that come through here 00 to 02 seem to have the least amount of problems for the amount of work they do. I am talking about work trucks not ones that run to the grocery store and what not.

If I keep this truck I am going to put 4. 10s in it. But I am looking at that aisin auto in a 3500 or a 4500.

I am glade you like your rebuild. Is there any thing on the label or paper work that says where it was done?

i changed the oil in my 5600 yesterday and did the quart overfill and today it grinds like crazy going into third gear, this truck is like a slot machine, sure is fun but will nickle and dime the hell out of you, all in the last weak, new tierods/steering stabilizer, ball joints, u-joints front and rear, fuel leak,starter is hanging up, steering box is taking a dump and now the trans is grinding, just turned 70,000, so yes i need to buy a rebuild kit for my 5600 with synchros

At least yours just take nickels and dimes!!:eek: Mine takes the paper money, usually lots of the ones with Franklin on the front !!:{

just went outside to verify a part number and there is coolant dripping off of the bell housing, hopefully it is the rear freeze plug, i will be able to do that when i pull the trans

I got my trans out finally tore it down. It had only one bad bearing, the one between the input and main shaft. I am going to order the parts from standard tomorrow. ordered a couple of 5600 tools. I have a feeling I will see the inside of them again. You can see why that barring doesn't get enough oil.

The rear main is starting to leak pretty bad. So I called the dodge dealer to see if I could get a seal under warranty. He said how would he know I didn't damage it while I was takeing out the trans. I told him you can't be serious, how do you stab that seal with a flywheel in the way. When I had it in here at 55k for a new posi that fell apart, it was leaking then and they said it was blowby, ya ok. They should had just been honest and said they don't have anyone smart enough to RR a seal. They did put a pinion seal in then, that is leaking now. The dealers have become absolutely useless at least the one in Newberry, MI. I run a small shop in a small town and I am going to have to order my dodge parts from the next state over, we all ready do for fords. Chysler closed the one with the good parts man.

Oh well if it is'nt the truck it's the wife.
