I have heard the G56 guys have to overfill the transmission to solve the lubrication issue that so many have talked about. But, with the NV5600 I have seen where guys are overfilling it? How much is too much? Any foaming issues? I am debating on whether to overfill mine by parking sideways on a steep hill and filling it up through the plug. Or can we fill through the shifter housing as do the G56 guys? Thanks.

Diesel Thunder.

I fill mine through the top hole in the PTO cover with the truck on level ground. It has worked for me for a lot of miles, no transmission problems at all.

New Cab and Chassis ordered and being built at the present time.

Either raising the driver's side, removing the top PTO bolt, or filling from the top are acceptable methods to overfill...

I think it was just recently they stated again to overfill by a quart... prevents starving bearings of oil when pulling/descending grades...

I got almost 5. 5 quarts in the last fill lifting the driver's side about 5 inches... 90k and no issues so far...

I'm considering drilling and tapping the PTO cover for a 1/4" pipe fitting, then between an elbow and extension I can overfill without any issue.

Before I traded my NV5600 off I use to fill it through the top PTO cover bolt. I think it took another 2-3 quarts (7-9 total). Worked fine for me and even seemed to shift a little better but that could have been just a placebo effect.

I just filled my NV5600 to the top bolt on the driverside PTO cover. Took an extra 2. 5-3. 0 qt. Maybe I am off my rocker, but I think it shifts more smoothly. However, I am wondering about any foaming issues. I am coming up on a major maintenance interval, so I am debating on an AMSOIL switch over. As well, what about those fast coolers and filter for the 5600? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks.

I over fill mine by raising the driver side up. I have an extra quart of oil, I might try and fit it in by the top bolt on the PTO cover.

Just did mine today,Fastcooler was leaking, about 2-3 drops per day and was sick and tired of it. It was time for a fluid change anyway. i overfiled by one quart threw the dipstick hole in the Fastcooler. DW

I place a floor jack under the rear diff and lift the truck until the transmission is level and than fill to the fill hole. My thought on this is that the fill hole is for a level transmission. When the truck is sitting on a level surface the transmission is at an angle. This also gets all of the oil out of the rear part of the transmission floor. I have done it this way since the first oil change and so far no problems. I use Redline MTL and noticed an improvement in shifting after it was installed. That first oil change was an important one as there was a lot of junk that came out of the case. The oil changes since than have been very clean.

Added a extra qt to mine yesterday morning through the top pto cover bolt. Didn't raise truck or anything. I thought it was just my imagination but less gear clatter/growl for sure. I had changed to Amsoil Mtl at 15k Now have 23k. Kinda a pain getting it through that small of a hole.

DPKetchum,

How do you like the AMSOIL MTL? I am coming up on a service and I was thinking of switching. Looks like good stuff per the amsoil website. Others, please chime in as well.

Thanks.

The shift quaility was much improved over the factory fill. Its still a big ole clunky trans but the Amsoil was a noticable improvent. I have yet to be dissapointed in a Amsoil product. I even use the Amsoil syn, tractor hyd. oil in a New Holland tractor. Same results including better/smoother bucket operation, wet brakes and wet clutch operation.
