Wanting to change out my transmission fluid, I looked up several of the posts that indicated you can purchase the gl5 from Texaco (1874 MTX Fluid). Calling Texaco, then the distributor, they no longer sell the 1874 in 5 gal containers, only 55 gallon drums now. Went to the local Dodge dealer, and they get $20. 88 per quart, for the Mopar p/n 4874464. Capacity for the 5600 is 9 pints, which comes out to 4 1/2 quarts. Five quarts, over $100. The only thing that helped me over the hump, was $35. 00 in coupons that I had from the dealership.
If anyone comes across the MTX in 5 gallon containers, ya better snatch it up.

Wiz, there has to be a better way for us to change the fluid in these trannys. Maybe if we all yell loud enough maybe one of these other oil companies will get their oil certified for our 6 speeds!!!! Wonder if Amsoil will step up to the plate???? Pete

Amsoil does have and oil for the 6-speeds, its the Series 2000 5W30 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine oil, I have used it in mine for the last 5000 miles and it seems to be working okay in it.

It's about this point I tell DC and NV where they can put their Fluid Spec. I luckily got a pale of 1874... but I'll be dipped in dogsnit if I'll $pay 20. 88/quart for anything short of liquid orgasmo... OR BUY IT IN 55 gallon quantities!

SHA!

Maybe Redline or NEO MTL when my stash runs out.

Ps. Check the distributors for 1874.

Good Luck

Max

Don't get me wrong, I've got Amsoil in my engine, trans case, and both diffs. But it is rated (not API certified, just "rated") for those applications and DC doesn't spec a special fluid there. So here's my question:
Has anybody got 500,000 miles on an NV-5600 with Amsoil, and still no problems?

(32,000 since June - I'm serious about this question - I bought heavy duty so she would last!)

Do you feel safer in your truck because the State of Arizona made you buy a license?

Don't forget, Amsoil warranty has NO mileage limit.
Read the NV 4500 gear lube posts, Amsoil is proving itself over and over again.

If you guys are serious about running your trucks to that kind of mileage, the Amsoil is the only choice. This is the company that based their entire product line on extended drains WITH BETTER wear protection.
Not a gimmick, simple fact since 1972.

The distributor is pulling your leg. I just paid $2. 18 a quart for the Texaco lube and got it from a local distrubitor. They did not have it in stock and had to order it. Find another distrubitor imo...

dane,
Do you have a phone number for your distributor? At that price, it's worth it, even to pick up the shipping cost.

I used AMSOIL 5W-30 for 12,000 miles and it made my 6-speed shift improperly. It kind'a ground going into third. Went back with MOPAR oil and the problem went away. I paid 12. 95 a quart at the dealer ship.

Ralph,
you have a 5 speed and I don't know what they use, but just so we don't get folks confused, whatever you do don't put gear lube in any NV-5600 6 speed. The six speed uses something that is basically souped-up motor oil; use of gear lube would cause problems in relative short order...

Another option is to use GM Part #12345349, which I understand is the same specification oil. I use that oil in my Grand Am per the service manual. I got a qt right here on the desk, and it is a SAE 75W, API GL3 rated oil. This stuff is not cheap at the GM dealers either, but is no where near as expensive as the prices you guys are quoting from the DC dealers. When the time comes, I will probably just go straight to Texaco, if I don't have to buy a barrel.
