Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) before I call the dealer

Oh wise and mighty TDR, I implore you for your great wisdom and assistance.

Ok, now that I got your attention, I have what I see as a major problem developing. I took my truck to a "do it all" for $100 station (AKA base service station). They changed out the transmission fluid and diffs for me and oil. Since then transmission has been getting more and more "notchy" when shifting up and dang near impossible to get into 2nd on the downshift. 4th poses the most problems by giving a false sense of being in gear until you let out the clutch. It will then either grind or kick out into your hand.

I took it to the dealership and had them look at it. The tech couldn't duplicate, so he wanted to change out the fluid. I said it was changed 6 months ago at less than 4,000 miles on the transmission (out to sea alot). While digging for the receipt of the last fluid change I noticed that the base put "75W90 SYN". Is this bad? I could have sworn this is supposed to be lighter oil and that 75W90 was for the 5 spd. Please help :{ :{ :{ :{ :{

The warranty runs out next week and I am scared.

Your loyal servant,

Vinnie

You have the wrong fluid.

Correct fuild is a 5w-30 motor oil style fluid. The dodge dealer will have it or Amsoil has a direct replacement fluid. Other than that, your only other option is the Pennzoil (yuk)!

I need to prove that the MOPAR recommended fluid is 5w-30 or its equivalent. Any ideas on where to find it. I've been searching all morning. Thanks to everyone for the help.

The only place to find the approved stuff is at the DC dealer. Nothing else is approved and will void your warranty, even though other stuff works as good or better.

You should be able to get the Pennzoil stuff at Autozone. It isn't motor oil - don't use motor oil. Even Amsoil has come out with a specific transmission lube (even though their earlier offering was a motor oil).

I have Redline MTL (manual transmission lube) in mine and it works great. If you want proof of the weight, look at the sticker on the PTO cover (side of transmission). It tells you exactly what to put in. You should be able to find it in the owners manual too (not sure).

Found the Answer

After many hours of searching this is what I found:

Texaco 1874 TMX (aka Penzoil Synchromesh, aka MOPAR #4761526 or 4874464, depending on year) is in deed a 5W-30. Actually, it is a 0W-20, by the specs provided by the 1874 MTX.

At 100C, it has a viscosity of 9. 08 centistokes (cSt), using SAE standards, this equates to a SAE rating of 20.

Then using the pour point of -50F (-45), and again with the SAE specs, this beomes a 0W.

At the time that NVG made the transmission, 0W oils were nonexisitent or hard to find, so they went with the next best thing 5W-30, which is pretty common.

I got a bunch of refs if some one want them.

Thanks again for all your help.

PS The dealer is doing a drain and fill on my transmission now and inspecting for damages. The base shop is going to get a mouth full from me.

Base Mech's

I wouldn't take a go cart to the Base shop there on 32nd Street... Man, I wished I was there, I'd do it for you... "GOOD STUFF" Red Line MTL in my 6 speed and Royal Purple in everything else... MM2 Anchorage and Boxer vet

CHolman,

I wish I would have known that, I just go there to get the oil changed normally. $60 for Delo 400 Synthetic. I thought I was getting a deal, $60 buck for the oil change $200 spent at the exchange while waiting. Who wants a $30 do it yourself-er, when you can go and spend money on toys while waiting. (I guess I should mention that I can't use one arm right now, fell down a ladder on the ship and destroyed my shoulder. )

Live and Learn. thanks for everyone's input and rec's. I'll look into the Redline.

BTW, I can see the Boxer from my office. I am a Flaptop man, myself.

Deadbus Take your truck to Sd Dodge they have been good to me I have an 04. 5

and have had no problems with them I to am at SWRMC pmp shop 32nd street

thanks michael smith EN2

michaelsmith,

I've had a lot of problems in the past with SD Dodge. I have repeatedly shown them that I know more about the CTD than they do. I normally have to get DC involved to get problems solved. Thanks for the rec, though.

I'll have to drop by your shop next week. I work over in QA trng.

Redline MTL is a GL4 75w-90.

Apologies in advance, but this information is incorrect. Redline MTL is listed as a 70W-80 GL4 lube. This is equivalent to roughly a 5W-30 on the engine oil viscosity scale. Redline does market a 75W-90 GL4 lube for transmissions, but it is labeled MT-90.

Much better

Well, the dealership changed out the fluid and man is it running so much better. 4th is still kinda notchy, but it is getting better by the mile. No sign of any shavings.

The oil the dealer drained from was a thick dark greenish oil, that smelled like someone had left a skunk in the batch. It smells just like rear diff oil to me.

Thanks again for all the help.

Run that dealer fill stuff for a while to clean everything back out, then replace again with this:
