Well I took my 2001 2500 4x4 to my local dodge dealer. With gear clash shifting problem!! They told me that they never heard of this problem before! there trans Tech drove my truck and found No problem! I told them it did it first thing in the morning. But they waited to drive it at 12:00 noon when temp was 75' . I called another dealer and they hadn't heard of the the 3rd clash probem . Any one know of good dodge dealer in ME.

Just curious what temperature does your gear clash start occuring at? Mine probably won't do it until next year when the temp hits around 25f in the mornings, any warmer and I can't get it to grind. Of course the dealer will never be able to reproduce this problem. :( I'll have to leave it overnight at their shop once it's cold enough and show them how to shift it to get it to grind, ie above 2500rpm on 3rd to 4th when it's still cold.

Hey guys,

Mine does that 3rd grind also, but I know when it will do it, so if I just let it warm up it won't grind. My question is that if I don't get it fixed, 'cause I'm out of warrenty, is it going to cause any problems in the future? I just changed my gear oil last week and didn't find anything outta the ordinary in the trans. Any opinions?

Mine's done it ever since I had it (just about). It ONLY does it when it's cold (and I mean winter, it doesn't do it at all now) and it only does it going in to 3rd gear, unless you're VERY careful, shift at low rpm, then it won't. I'm thinking about putting some Mobil1 in it to see if that helps, but don't know what kind of task that is. Is it a pain in the rear to drain and fill back up.

UKRugbyman77: The transmission gets better as the miles are added. Mine was tough to shift without clash in the morning. I made a conscious effort to do the 2-3 shift a little slower and to make sure that my left foot had the clutch pedal to the floor. That pretty much cured the 2-3 crunch. Now when it is warm, I can flick the shifter fairly swiftly, but just remember it is a TRUCK transmission designed to handle a significant amount of torque at low RPM's.
