I have had a very intermittent gear grind when I am shifting my NV5600 in my 2002 2500 4x4. I have taken the truck to two dealers and they could never get it to grind. I am not surprised by this because it has only happened about 12-20 times in 42,000 miles, so a dealer driving 5 miles has a better chance of winning the lottery than duplicating the problem. The grind that I have is as follows. You go to make a shift and you have the clutch depressed all of the way, you attempt to make the shift and it grinds like you do not have the clutch depressed. I bring it back to N release and then depress the clutch again and it shifts fine.

My real concern is that the last time that it acted up I took the shift assembly apart to see if there was a problem in the linkage. When I took the linkage off the trans. I noticed, what I would consider, a considerable amount of syncro debris on the isolator. I have jpg's but they are too large. I will e-mail if someone wants to see them. I took it to a dealer and they said that it was normal. I have asked several of my friends and they say that it is excessive for the mileage.

After I got it back from the dealer I installed the BD short shift kit. I cleaned off this debris and saved it in a bag. I also took an oil sample. Does anyone know the wear metal limits in the transmission oil? Has anyone seen syncro debris when they have installed the BD short shift kit?

Below is the history of the trans.

Date Miles Problem

11-23-01 2931 Leak at flywheel housing unsure if it was engine or trans. oil Byers Dodge in Columbus OH checked level, OK and put ultraviolet dye in the trans. oil. They said I would be fine to get back to NJ.

11-24-01 3491 Dropped off at Flemington Dodge the leak was bad now and I also complained that the trans sometimes would grind on 1 to 2 shifts and 2 to 3 shifts. The trans. input retainer was leaking. They installed a new retainer, seal, clutch, clutch bearing/spring, and resurfaced the flywheel. They attributed the grinding to possibly the low oil due to the leak. They could not duplicate.

03-30-02 13711 I had Greenfield Dodge check for the intermittent trans grind. They could not duplicate either. It had grinded two times the week before I dropped it off. Once on a 2 to 3 up shift and once on a 4 to 3 downshift.

06-09-03 41853 Trans. grinded on the 2 to 3 up shift several times when the trans oil was cold. When I got home I decide to pull the shifter to see if there was something wrong with the shift linkage. When I pulled the shift tower off the trans. I found what I would consider a large amount of syncro or bearing debris. I took it right to Dick Greenfield Dodge. They test drove it and found nothing abnormal.

Thanks,

Neil

Same Problem, almost....

I had the same problem shifting up or down into 3rd. It would just grind every once in a while and got worse by the day. I took it to my dealer here in Utah and they said they had seen it before. They had to pull the transmission and replace the synchros. Fixed it the first time once they got the proper replacement parts. Now everyonce in a while I get a grind going down into second. Either from 4-2 around a turn or 3-2. might have to have that looked at as well. Good luck.

Thanks,

I just do not have any good dealers in the area, I have gone to three. Did your dealer duplicate your grind or did they inspect something to determine that there was a problem.

I work for MTU/Detroit Diesel on the AAAV, the replacement to the USMC's old AAV's. We have an engine in this vehicle that is 27 liters turns 3400 rpm and makes 2700 hp.

Small World

NMurray, you wouldn't believe it, but I was a 1833 in the Marine Corps. AAV Crew Cheif. I am sure you know about the engine in that bohemoth. Cummins 903 it wasn't the fastest thing in the world but it could go up, over, or tow just about anything I was stationed in Kaneohe Bay, HI..... back to the subject. My truck was bad enough that after about 30 minutes they duplicated it and took it in the next day. Best of luck.

I have found that using the Redline MTL fluid has made the transmission shift much eisier and it is very easy to get into reverse now... . I have had that grind and problema little but not now. it is made for the syncros that are in our trannies.

mine happens every single time I go from 1st to 2nd, or 3rd to second... Done it since day one of the install, and it is getting annoying. I am going to take it to Blumenthal's before the warranty is up so they can do something about it while still under warranty. It is easier to float it into second rather than clutch it. Pretty bad for a transmission with less than 15k on it.....

When I bought my truck the salesman told me it was "normal" for the NV5600 xfer case to grind sometimes when going into 4WD, but it has never done it.
