I went to the dealer yesterday, where my truck has been on a lift for the better part of week, most of that time waiting for approval from the warranty place to begin teardown.
Seeing an NV5600 apart is pretty impressive. The mechanic was dead-on with his diagnosis: the Intermediate Shaft race is not just toast, there were gouges in it; the bearing itself showed no damage. I don't know what would have caused the damage, but the outcome of this is a minor overhaul, i. e. all new bearings and races in the transmission. Getting the parts is the challenge, as they are coming from several depots, including the national depot. All parts should be here by next Wednesday.
The gears themselves looked brand new; no wear, which confirms that the original owner took extremely good care of the truck. The mechanic was impressed at the cleanliness of the underside of the truck. The transmission case looked new, but it definitely had never been taken apart, and they needed a cherry picker to move it (four guys lifted it, but it was heavy as hell).
What surprised me was that, when I took a look at the clutch (still bolted to the block), it said Luk. Did Mopar use Luk clutches? The mech said no, not that he was aware of. The clutch does feel, stiff is the best word I can think of right now. We are replacing the clutch bearing just for insurance, which I'm paying for, since warranty doesn't cover clutch parts.
I'll post final results, hopefully next week.
