Anybody use this stuff?

I saw this the other day at a Napa store and inspected. Label says its formulated for manual transmissions that require ATF, multi vis or straight weight engine oil. Sounds interesting as there are a number of members here that have used Amsoil 5W-30 in their 6 speeds. I am currently on my 2nd fill of the Amsoil. The 1st ran 50k and was clear as a bell coming out and I experienced no problems with it. I was just interested in the Sychromax as it is designed to be a trans lube. It seems like it said that it was good for transfer case use as well. I don't remember at the moment. Any thoughts or experiences out there?

Darren,

Engine oils are typicly used in transmission applications in which EP additives are not required. They may also be recommended in equipment containing corrosive sensitive components such as copper, brass and bronze.

I beleive the spec that Chrysler requires is MS-9224, which is motor oil, preferably SAE 5W-30.

When comparing SAE gear oil with SAE engine oil grades, the gear oil grade numbers are always larger. This may lead one to beleive that gear oils are more viscous (heavier) than engine oils. The truth is, in many cases they are not. AN SAE 90 gear oil for example may have the same Viscosity of a SAE 40 or 50 grade engine oil. ATF+4 for example is actually a "0W-20 multi-viscosity hydraulic fluid" specificly formulated for Chrysler applications.

My first thought is "why risk it?" Yeah, DC is charging a ridiculous price for the oil, but compared to the cost of a transmission rebuild, why do "research" by trying something that may or may not work as well as the recommended fluid?

My second thought is that if you decide to go for it, do oil analysis so that if you are picking up higher wear or eating bronze bushings or something like that, at least you'll have a chance to catch the problem early before you ruin your transmission.

This is JMO, and yes, I guess someone could say I am "experimenting" with non-API certified Amsoil. But then again, quite a few others checked it out before I tried it, and I am doing the oil analysis thing to verify my own results with the product.

I wont buy the oil from DC. So after stopping by every auto parts store in the area I found pennzoil synchromesh manual trans fluid. This is the recommended fill for the 6 speed. On the bottle it states that it meet chrysler specs ms9224. I thought about amsoil 5w-30 but until I know for sure its safe I'm sticking with whats recommended. Dont want to risk messing up the sychronizers. Its $4. 99 a qt at salvo auto parts.

Good tip, Paul. If it calls out the same spec on the bottle as what is called for in the Owner's manual then it is not "experimenting" as I was implying. I'll check this one out when I'm ready for my next change!
