I changed my fluid today in my NV5600. I also pulled the PTO covers off thinking I read somewhere there are magnets on the back of those that are good to clean. I pulled both and found no magnets, cleaned the old RTV off put new RTV on and bolted them back on. Am I imagining that I read there to be magnets on the back of the covers? I filled it with 6 quarts (1 quart over) of Amsoil Synchromesh and it shifts really smooth, even when cold. Although its not a fast shifting trans I love rowing through the gears on this thing!

Thats how much I filled it with before and it was leak free. I've read stories of people putting 8+ quarts in these transmissions to ensure the rear bearing gets plenty of lubrication.

There is a magnet in there, you just missed it. Mine has a thin magnet, about one inch by two inches, inside bottom of the transmission.

The magnet is on the bottom of the transmission, not on the back of the PTO covers. It's pretty thin- almost like a refrigerator magnet but thicker. At least mine is like that. I bought a few extra from Genos, seem very strong round pair per pack. I will stick those where the OEM is.

Darn! I thought I read they were on both PTO covers. I never thought about looking down in the bottom of the trans... not sure why must have had a moment! Oh well now I know for next time.

I installed the PTO cover filter one mine. I didn't look for or find the OEM magnet, but I installed a magnet inside the filter. With 250K on the stock trans, I'm not sure if it was really worth the money for the filter, but it makes me feel better. I used the Pennzoil Syncromesh.

what is correct fluid capacity of NV5600. TIA 6

That depends on who you ask, anywhere from one to two gallons. The owners manual for the 1st. gen. Getrag, the 2nd. Gen. NV4500 and NV5600 say the transmission doesn't need serviced so they don't publish a fill capacity (dumb). They need changed regular. I change at 36,000 miles, keep the oil clean and full and they will last a long time. I do not overfill but I do take the PTO covers off and mop up the bottom of the case. It takes about 4. 5 quarts. If you just drain from a cover bolt it will hold about 4 quarts. I use 15/40 engine oil in all my Cummins powered trucks, they all have different trannys.
