Perhaps DC finally ralized they can't put a particular "Brand" of oil etc. on the transmission in question, without supplying it to the customer free.

However, on the other side of the coin, they (DC) say the lube from the factory is good for the duration, so by the time the drive train hits 70,000, it's out of warranty anyway!

That's different than my 01, I always thought that too, that they should supply the lube if you couldnt use anything else. i like the wording on your 03 better. Since the factory fill is "lifetime" that is probably their out.

Like you, I dont believe in lifetime fills and wanted something better. Most people will assume that OEM is the best possible lube when in fact, all the OEM is worried about is getting the assmebly to last through warranty period.

Thanks for posting the wording in the manual, sure would hate to tell the wifey that I had to buy an 03 or 04 owners manual (and truck too) just to find out.

Shifting is SMMMOOOOOOTTHHH! 1 finger shifting. 50,000 miles delivering RVs all over 48 states. transmission guy took off the shifter and looked down into the trans case and fluid and said " New transmission, huh? I told him how many miles it had on it and he looked at me and said "Yeah, right"

I think I kind of hurt his feelings.

You can use any lube you want and still be within warranty requirements as long as the lube meets Diamler/Chrysler Specification MS-9224. Unless it says so on the bottle label or the manufacturer claims so in writing, it does not. Royal Purple indirectly claims to.

Until these lube manufacturers spend the money to have their lubricants certified there is no telling. They well meet or exceed the spec. but there is no way for us the users to verify or know.

How scr*wed am I?

I let an establishment that shall remain nameless (it rhymes with "Spiffy Tube"). I asked them before I let them do a transmission Fluid change on my NV5600 and they assured me they had the right stuff. Got home and looked at the receipt and this is what it says:

Front/Rear Diffs : 75w140 (5qts each)

Transfer Case: Multipurpose ATF (5qts)

Manual transmission service: "Gearplus Super 75w90". (5qts)

I thought 75w90 was what belonged in my diffs not in my transmission. transmission is near impossible to downshift into 3rd and 4th. Smooth into 5th and 6th. 3rd is okay upshifting and 4th can be a bear, sometimes. Am I OK??????

Please help/recommend/berate. Thanks!

75W-90 is way to thick for the NV-5600. The lube should be more like a 5W-30 lube.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. Oil is coming out today. I have almost lost 2nd, 4th, and 5th. The only way to catch 4th on the downshiftt is to hold the clutch in, ram it into 3rd and slam it into 4th 9hit or miss).

Deadbus, I hate to tell you this but the damage may already be done from the description you give of how the transmission is shifting. You need to contact the manager of the Lube Place and ngotiate the removal and inspection of the transmission at a COMPETENT Dodge dealer. The Spiffy Lube made the mistake and they are resonsible for the damages. DON'T let them drain and replace the oil. You need to examine the oil for an signs of syncro shavings. It maybe that you lucked out and no damage was done but you need to cover yourself on this in the event that the transmission grenades later on down the road. Get it in writing that the Lubes guys made a mistake and put the wrong oil in and that the Dodge dealer inspected the transmission and their results/findings.

Deadbus, if that lube that they put in was a GL5, you may want to run a short interval with the replacement lube oil then flush it again.

I would be concerned about using Pro-long in any of my trannies. I think it may have chlorine in it which would cause severe damage to most yellow metals.

Aftermath

Ok so here goes:

The manager at Spiffy Lube was very apologetic as was the lead tech. They made the "mistake" of thinking this was a 5 spd. They did a drain and refill. I talked with 2 dealers in the area and they said it was ok, just get a letter from them stating the facts.

The manager offered the letter before I asked. It would seem that the same business forgot to put the oil back into a car last week and burned up an engine (so the dealer says, explains the really, really friendly customer service I got. )

For the fill, the techs went to the local dealer and purchased MOPAR #4876684 oil per the manual. The lead tech says he used to work at a local dealer and went off on that dealer for providing bad info on my transmission.

All in all, it just provides more proof that I should function as my own service/warranty station. Can't beat 49. 99 for a transmission fluid change (2x's over). They wouldn't tell me what they paid for the MOPAR (they did show me the case they bought, dealer backed it up) Didn't think to ask the dealer how much it costs. I've heard $10. 50/qt on here.

Thanks for everyone's help. Truck runs really good, shifts awesome. Gonna let the dealer do the valve lash next (Manager is a good friend and gives me a major break, so until I transfer I'll give him some business. Looks the other way on b*mbers).

Vinnie:)

I'd like to point out one thing. The transmission shifting smoothly or not shifting smoothly isn't always directly related to the oil inside it. Your clutch setup and pilot bearing condition will also have a huge effect on this. Especially in the 5600, the transmission assembly is quite large, very heavy and with all that rotating mass, the synchros are strained enough as it is, you factor in a sticky bearing forcing the transmission to turn with the clutch engaged and that will make for very stiff shifting.

That being said I have 20k on RP Synchromax in mine, with no problems and excellent shifting in cold weather. :D
