Hi guys, I'm new to this site and not very experienced with the nv5600 (all my buddies have the 5spd or an auto). I've seen mention of problems with the nv5600 input shaft bearing wearing out prematurly. What causes this, what are the symptoms, and is there anything that can prevent it? I just bought an 02 with 76,000miles on it and after changing the output seal, I filled it with royal purple syncromax. I'm not sure how much I put in it, but it was enough to fill it to the bottom edge of the fill plug. It seems fine so far, no abnormal noises and other than a little notchiness, it shifts great, no grinding.

there is a thread about this somewhere the fix is over filling the case with (1?) extra quart fluid. help me out guys memory doesnt improve w/age!:)

how do you add extra without it all coming out the fill hole? or do you just have to be super quick getting the fill plug back in?

You can pull the shift tower to over fill the trans or if that is not something you want to do then park on a very steep slant sideways and you can get some more fluid in the trans.

I'll have to give that a shot next time I service it. I'll try parking it on a hill or jacking the one side up. How much extra do I wanna add? I've seen some people on here say add an extra 2qts. Also, are there any problems with anything leaking with the extra oil in there?

When you fill it use the upper bolt hold on the same plate that you removed the lower bolt to drain it. If you leave the filler plug out you will know when you get to the "full" point. Put the filler plug back in and then add your additional fluid. I think I only put an additional quart in when I did mine last month.

You will like the 02 HO... . solid. Ticked over 340,000 miles a month ago and have only had 2 lift pumps, one injection pump, one APPS and a wheel bearing go bad.

The transmission had started to behave a bit stiff but considering all of the heavy towing it took I guess I can't complain. Tossed in a bottle of friction modifier with this past fluid change an it is back to behaving itself... . mostly.

AFoulk,

The problem you're referring to is a headache I am currently dealing with. My NV5600 is getting overhauled under warranty (thank God) at the dealer. The actual failure was the intermediate shaft race on the input shaft. There was a piece of the race that was missing, causing a whine, until I depressed the clutch. The bearing looked fine... I inspected every roller and found no damage. Neither I nor the Dodge tech know what caused this.

The original owner of my truck was a trucker for 38 years and babied it. I'm chalking it up to a fluke thing that, hopefully, will not happen again. I had always been under the assumption that the NV5600 was bulletproof; this overhaul tells me otherwise. The good news is that the gears look brand new; I'm simply getting new races and bearings.

Well, I added the 1qt. -1 1/2qts. of royal purple I had left from my output seal job. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope it doesn't give me any problems:) If it does, I guess it would be a good time to upgrade to a twin disk clutch:)
