In the last few weeks the 6 speed has become more and more difficult to get into gear from a dead stop. It shifts normally (notchy) once moving, but initially getting it into 1st or 2nd is become more difficult. 30,000 miles so far with no performance mods. Any ideas? :( Thanks!

I am glad to see this post as my 2000 quad cab has a 6 speed and the clutch breaks down at the very top of travel. You only need to mash it down about 1 1/2-2" to change gears. It is a bear to get into revers and I have noticed when it is cold the transmission seems to grind when I change gears. Especially 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. You can't really hear it cause the engine noise is too loud, but you can "feel" it in the stick.

thanks

Don

My truck has been doing the same thing for awhile now. After reading what claymike said, I printed the page. Tues. I'm installing a new clutch. I will be looking for these items as the mechanic takes mine out.

I Love This Site!:D

If the clutch disk wobbles, it won't release cleanly and initially getting to gear from a stop is harder. Later, changing gears is harder too. Either the hub is going out on the disk, or the pilot bearing is gone. Holding the pedal down at stoplights kills the pilot bearing. A less likely possibility is that the pressure plate is bad and won't release properly.

Yes the trans could be bad too, less likely, but you better take care of everyting before the 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty is up. You are on your own on the clutch over 12K miles (and the stocker isn't worth putting back in anyway, imho), but the trans would be very expensive on your own after 36K.

Mine has been doing the same thing for about 6000 miles (now have 35,000). Almost seems like it comes and goes, but maybe I'm just getting used to it. Had my slave cylinder replaced with 3 miles on the truck, maybe it went bad again. Guess I'll call the dealer.....

Thanks for all the info,

Jason

Ditto that!

My 6 speed is always "notchy" while shifting but lately hard to get into gear after stopping, sometimes almost impossible. The only gear you can find after a stop is 5th, unless you want to bend the gear shift. Just can't tell whether it's the clutch, or the transmission. I'll follow this thread carefully, about to take it to the dealer. (2001 built late Jan. 2000, never been to the shop for anything, YET)

First, congratulations on your initial post. Sorry it had to be on a negative subject :( Anyway, notchy seems to be the norm. Tough to get into gear when at a stop is different. Mine is a 2001 built in April 2000. May be same transmission problem?? Surely there are others. Maybe they will chime in with the real answer :D

Pilot Beraring Stops Turning...

... after you push clutch pedal down. Joe, how does this stop the pilot bearing from turning? Isn't the pilot bearing in the flywheel? Just curious as any clutch I had to change out this bearing is in the flywheel and as long as the engine is running the bearing would be turning  I would think just the reverse is happening. With the clutch engaged the input shaft to transmission will be turning at the same speed as the engine, there is where I could see the pilot bearing being defeated. With the clutch pushed pedal pushed down, this disengages the clutch and the input shaft to transmission should stop and the pilot bearing should be rotating on the input shaft. Just thinking out loud here, I don't know if these clutch set-up are different form a gasser - plus I haven't purchased a manual yet either.

Just curious?

That is what Joe means..... holding the clutch pedal in at a stop light is hard on the pilot because the pilot brg. spins continuously and the input shaft has to stop spinning to allow the driver to shift the gears. From what we have found, it does not appear to be disc wobble in the ETH. But many people have found if they remove the shifter tower and clean the rack from old grease and debris and then relube, they can resolve the hard shifting problems. There seems to be a problem with metal shavings.

Have not had problem yet but a question a little off target. I put Amsoil in mine and it did nto make any real diff in shifting. If something did give up can the stealer tell it has amsoil in it rather than their oil? If they can how?

Peter

Had not thought of cleaning anything out. It is almost as if the shifter is trying to go between slots instead of within them as they should. Not knowing the inside of a transmission as you do, it is a bit difficult for me to explain. I'll check the service manual for a drawing and/or procedure for what you are suggesting.

Many thanks,

David
