Having problems getting my 04. 5 in gear when at a complete stop. I usually have to bump the throttle, wait a couple of seconds, finally drop it into 3rd and then drop it into 2nd to take off. Even after getting it in gear shifting isn't easy. Not grinding but seems to catch a couple of teeth before going into gear. Just replaced my clutch and slave cylinders with South Bend stuff due to a wasted clutch. Shifts a little better but not much. Heard synchro problems are common in the NV5600 trannys. Is this common and if so does the dealer cover it? Does any aftermarket company make replacement parts?

sounds like pilot bearring to me. If it starts to go it will turn the input shaft and make it hard to go it gear from a start. If it was syncros, then it should be hard to go it gear from gear to gear. When i change clutches i suggest to the customer to upgrade to roller bearring pilot bearring rather than the needle bearring pilot. When your engine and trans gets hot the grease melts out and then your needle bearring goes next.

It's not the clutch. It's all brand new from South Bend. It's the DD Ceramic 12B 3850# with slave cylinder kit upgrade. It did it before the clutch replacement and it still does it after. Just replaced fluid not to long ago with all synthetic. It is hard to get in gear from a start and hard to shift from gear to gear. Hear other guys talking about early synchro problems in these nv5600s. Only has 42,000 on it. A

according to the manual from dodge a clutch that is worn will cause the syncronizer rings to prematurely wear causing a hard shift or a grinding. the wear on the first gear syncro could have happened with the old clutch. secondly the shift rails could have a shift rail hanging up making it hard to shift. dodge is very specific about the oil used in those transmissions and that they are not underfull or overfull. first and second gears in those transmissions use a dual cone synchronizer to make shifting easier. I don't believe the clutch or pilot bearings are the cause because they are in the front of the case as is fifth gear. more likely would be a problem in the rear of the box such as a rear bearing or a 1st gear syncro. I pulled my NV 5600 out two days ago and have been chasing parts ever since, if you are looking for parts i would suggest drivetrain.com they have an 800 number and talk with shep he has been the most knowledgable person on these transmissions i have talked two and the first guy who didn't give the attitude like i was keeping him from his coffee break. good luck!

I think the syncro's job is to get the 2 gears to match speed when the shaft is spinning. Your post says "when your at a complete stop" is when you have the problem. When your sitting still the shaft is not spinning.

Not sure if your old enough to remember them, but old ford 3 speeds did not have a syncro on 1st, you could not get it into first until you stopped, and the shafts quit spinning.

What I expect is your input shaft has pressure on it from either a clutch dragging or a pilot bearing going bad.

SBC had an issue with pilot bearings, from what I've read they have been corrected. I guess the bearings were too tight and dragged on the input shaft. The synchro's having nothing to do with it if you're not moving. On older transmission's they didn't even put them on 1st or reverse, because you shouldn't be moving when using those anyway.

When I got my SBC installed it was noticebly more difficult to shift, I have since gotten used to it and the pilot bearing has worn in a little allowing easier shifts. Perhaps call Peter at SBC and talk with him and you're installer about it.

Will it shift easily when the motor is not running?

Check under both running and not running and see if there is a difference. If smooth then the engine is not running, suspect clutch or pilot problems. If just as bad when not running, look for transmission problems.
