cap-n-cray,

Your friends problem started much like mine - I changed the fluid, first was new Dodge fluid and have sinced worked my way through many different brands, until I found what works for me - Amsoil 75W90 (MTF) & LS diff fluid.

Have your friend add 1 bottle of Mopar Limited slip differential fluid & drive the truck around town, where he will have to shift alot. If this helps the shifts so be it, if it doesn't, he's only out $6. 00 or so. (It helped me)

You can use the advertisers or I know of 2 shops in Utah, that can take care of the NV5600 repairs. I have installed transmissions rebuilt by both & they do a good job. PM if you want their information.

Thanks Silver_Ram,

Once I (with my friends help) narrow it down to the trans he will try the limited slip or friction modifier. I am having him do some test on the truck to make sure it is not the clutch pedal hydraulics.

How many miles on your trans fluid set up now?

Cary

The Limited Slip fluid & FM should be about the same thing, you can even get from auto parts stores.

The current fluid is about 23,000 miles and I will be changing it out in the spring. I do it every couple of years now, because I don't drive the truck as much and I like to keep things fresh.

Subscribed.

I may have to give the Mopar limited slip additive a try on my wife's truck. It rejects shifts between 3rd and 4th gear unless a momentary pause is allowed in neutral. Then is shifts into gear real smooth. Same thing on upshifts from 4th to 3rd gear occasionally. Aside from that, it shifts good.

Interesting thread. I would have thought the limited slip additive would not be compatible with the yellow metal and syncro's as well. Learn something new everyday.

Well the FM did not help the sifting problem. The clutch is not the problem. My friend is now looking in to getting the trans rebuilt. He is getting different stories on what to do. The trans shop says there was some faults with the early six speed trans, '01 and earlier, which were supposedly corrected in the '02-'03 trans. The shop is telling him they can get a rebuilt trans to with newer '02-'03 upgrades for $5K. Does that sound correct?

I started the thread that darkhorse linked above. The noise in that thread turned out to be the rear differential bearings. I DID get the transmission gone through in 2010 through. I had a local shop pull it and shipped it to Standard, in my case they just replaced the brass parts, everything else including bearings was reused, of course I got their power lubrication modification too. I think everything was about $3500 including the shipping, labor, new SBC clutch and hydraulics, rear main, etc. , basically all new from the back of the engine to the back of the NV5600. $5K sounds a bit high IMO.

I rebuilt my own in 2009 and I am no trans builder. It was my first rebuild of ANY kind actually. I had fried 3-4 synchros and replaced them. I too reused all other bearings stuff. I did have to replace 4th gear as well after chipping a few teeth while trying to get it apart. All Data says to use a 100T press - that is probably overkill but 20T was just barely enough. And I had to use heat to get it off. I think I was in it about $300 when all was said and done.
