any word on changing available rearend ratios? with the G56 . 79 overdrive ratio and a 3:73 it's like having a 4:10 with the NV5600

Yes, As far as I have heard and found - but the area of the clutch is more

still, less leverage there... i hope it is a good transmission, or then the other camps will again be one up on us [no offence, but their slushboxes are better :(] and we had the better manual...

Tomeygun mentioned in another thread that he's got a couple in route. I think he said he should have them in by Wednesday this week 2/17/05.

The AAM website lists for the AAM 1150 rear axle ( I think that is what Dodge uses) as having a Gear Ratio Range of 3. 54 - 5. 75, so it appears to be available from the axle supplier.
Limiting factor is not the 1150 rear axle, but the 925 front axle, which has a ratio range of only 3. 54 - 4. 10. While that would allow 3. 54s, there'd be an issue with people looking for lower ratios to mate with oversize rubber.

Also note that the G56/3. 73 combo has the same GCWR as the 48RE/4. 10, so as far as capability, Dodge feels the Cummins/G56/3. 73 combo is sufficient to pull anything you would want with a Ram.

You are a brave one Tim! Gonna be a Dodge "Beta" Tester eh? :--)

What would you do? These were my options:

Buy a used Cummins for more than a new one is worth, with 4. 10s (yuck) and cloth seats.

Buy a new Duracrap with IFS, yeah, right... .

Buy a new Ford (which I do like the truck) with the 6. 0 :( NO WAY, too many problems

Buy a new Dodge with a transmission that is NOT new, just new to Dodge pickups, and get whatever options you want, including heated leather, and it'll cost less than a used one.

Wow, that one sure was a no brainer. :-laf

Let us know your thoughts Tim. Congrats on the new ride. I love mine! Oo.

Thanks, it should be in March 1st or so, give or take.

Keep in mind that my opinions will be based on the fact that I already know how to drive a manual... . I hate automatics and everything I own is a 4 speed or 5 speed. I think the NV 5600 is a breeze to drive. Gears are a little close together (ratios) but it makes for easy gear choices when towing a load I would think.

I'm sure the G-56 will be everything the NV 5600 was and then some. I wish I'd ordered a truck before though, I'd rather have the NV 5600 due to the deeper overdrive.

Oh well, I snoozed. I guess I'll just have to put some 35s on it. :-laf

Let's trade trannies! :-laf

J/K. I don't really think anyone would be that crazy. I'm sure the new trans will be great. One of the local dealers is getting a couple on Friday. I think I'm going for a test drive on Saturday.

GUYS, if this subject/comparison runs true to form, and unless the new transmission quickly turns out to be a complete DOG, you can count on a long stream of early glowing reports!

The same thing happened with the transition to the 3rd generation trucks - early owner comments were all glowingly favorable, and only after a year or two, and significant mileage, did we start hearing about vibration problems, early U-joint and other steering component failures, problems with the latest and greatest lift pumps, etc. , etc...

It's just human nature to view some new high-dollar investment thru rose-colored glasses, and crow about the GOOD points, while turning a deaf ear and blind eye to the downside elements.

I expect we will see the same thing with the new transmission - just wait a couple of years and hundred K miles to decide what they REALLY are like! ;) :D

I agree! I think that in the end we will find that the new G-56 won't be any worse then the NV series trannies. What I WISH would happen though is that EVERYONE would quit calling it a GETRAG! Seems the boys on the 1st gen forums really like to call it that. :p

I think i remember seeing post on here that old 6 speed was only good for 600 fpof tourqe. maybe thats why the new transmission, maybe its stronger???
