Well its happened again . The 5th gear has fallen off the trans out put in my 96 3500 4 x 4.deisel. So I was doing some research and came across an additional means of retaining the nut that holds the gear on the shaft. Only works for the 4 x 4 trucks. Any one tried this repair and what's your thoughts. Seems to me a simple approach to keeping it together and I like that. I need to figure out in a hurry what I will do. TRUCK DOWN.:{:{:{

Yes the 5th gear nut retainer works well. I have had one on my 97 4X4 for three years and it's still holding. It's also the original nut that did not come off. I think it's the best fix on the market.

I am getting fully splined shafts for 180.00 . Also if you go on eBay you can find that same retainer your looking at for about 100 bucks . What ever you do don't weld the nut to the shaft .

I have contemplated the shaft upgrade with corresponding fully splined gear , But the cost for me at this time when all done is too high. I did the first gear /upgraded retaining nut on my truck 13 years ago and I wrecked my back at the time trying to torque it up under the truck in the driveway. No way I will do that again. This unfortunatly will be farmed out to a trusted local mechanic that does lots of work on only Cummins powered Dodges and Chrysler vehicles Retired Chrysler tech. I think I will be ordering one of those retainers.

I like the retainer design It looks like a good deal . The idiot that welded the nut on mine didn't tighten the nut against the gear so the gear could float around on the shaft and that caused the teeth to brake on the upper gear now I gotta see if I can get it off without destroying the shaft I guess if it does o well but Im thinking if I can get it apart try one of these retainers as well .

It is definitely looking to be a viable way to go. Rebuilt exchange trans with shaft/gear upgrade at $1680.00 plus the labor to install and shipping costs will be way too rich for me at this time.

It's nice you've got somebody you can trust to do the work for you the last job I had done my a** is still sore from getting charged twice the origional quote and then they screwed up more than they fixed again thanks moonlight diesel .
Got out the grinder today and got the nut off that had been welded on I've got a new fifth gear and a new nut and I'm going to order one of those retainers for it. Let us know how it goes with the install if through guy mentions anything .

Shaft shouldn't be damaged to bad I just ground that nut off mine that had been welded and they just reused the nut that had came off and they ran it long enough to wear the threads smooth in the nut then they hammered it on and welded it . So I think if you get a new nut new gear you'll be fine .

Transfer case is out of truck and the 5th gear still is snug fitting to shaft when reinstalled. Actually had to tap it back on as I could not push it on by hand. Got the fifthgearrepair.com and it looks like it will work. Thinking of going AMZOIL oil for trans as they have a replacement for the MOPAR pt #. Had to fight to remove t case adapter bolts as last time the 8 bolts were out locktite was used so I had to heat them to remove. Hope to have back in this coming weekend.

So did you decide to tackle the job yourself? As far as oil I was using mopar only oil but this time I went to shell 75w 90 transmission has never shifted as nice as it does now . I would also recommend getting a filter kit from quad4x4.com while you have the truck down .

Filter that spent two years in np205 transfer case

I have tackled the job and finished today with help from my two sons. Tightening the nut was the worst part but we did it. I used Amzoil oil as they show a direct replacement for the NVG 4500 Trans. A filter would be nice , But I am on a tight budget. Let it sit overnight so all the sealant and Locktite can develop full strength before a test drive Tuesday.
Parts used for repair.
8 new socket head bolts to replace buggered 10 mm 12 points.
One fifthgearrepair.com retainer.
4 qts Amzoil oil for NVG 4500. all in trans.
New socket head bolt for Mopar retainer nut.
Locktite red.
RTV Silicone sealant.
Locktite blue.
Top up T case oil as some lost but nice and clean.
Thanks for suggestions and help from all.

Glad you got it fixed Hope it works good and lasts a long time . Ive got another one to do but farming is starting to get busy so I think I've finally found somebody I can trust to do R&R and I'll do the rebuild and set up off the transmission myself as I get time . I'm going the fully splined mainshaft route all new bearings and synchros seals the whole works.

Just lost my 5th gear for the 2nd time. It last 80,000 for the fist and 75,000 miles on the 2nd. Did you use the fifth gear repair kit? How much is the kit? How is it holding up?

Ron

Well so far the repair is holding up. Time will tell. I did use the MOPAR replacement split on one side retaining nut as I did not want the style that uses 2 or 3 set screws jammed into threads of shaft for gear in case it did work off and destroyed the threads. Their was no damage to the threads when it fell off. I have only done two heavy trips since the repair. One of only 120 miles and the most recent of 350 miles in the mountains. Both about 15,500 lbs. I purchased the repair directly from Fifthgearrepair. $145.00. Their may be some of their kits on E Bay but was not sure and wanted a U S made part. Not offshore if they exist. Seems to be a good alternative for the do it yourselfer on a budget.
