Great ... Busses driven by remote control from INDIA

TMTT

Forget RC buses try RC locomotives with no engineer on the head end. These puppies are rolling through cities and towns dragging some very nasty cargo. As far as no strikes we are not allowed to working for the RR either, it has to do with the Railway Labor Act.

Oh and could someone see to it that Kelly Ripa is under my tree X-mas morning.

It all comes down to the money: be it higher retirement ages or increased salaries. Each side is trying to secure the money into their coffers. Lets face it, business is about money, and thats it. Its a sad thing but true. I'm a younger member of the workforce (33) and I like to think that in days past people cared about other things like quality, service, and community fellowship but what little of this I have seen is slipping away as years go by. Working people have to do whatever is necessary to secure their future, coporate entities don't care. As far as the union bashing on this thread goes all I have to say is don't talk of which you know nothing about. I've worked in industrial construction 8 years nonunion and 6 years union and have now started a small nonunion company. Both sides have pluses and minuses you'd have to have been there to know. It takes alot of guts to stand up for something that the majority of people frown on (as in this case) as these people stand to lose their livelihood.

Wish my train ride was $2. 00 each way. Septa (Septicsystem) wants $11. 00 round trip or $165. 00 month for a monthly pass (plus $1. 00 to park in a station they forget to snow plow).

I could ride Amtrash if I go to a different station (that has a full parking lot). Amtrash wants $167. 00 for a monthly pass, or something like $12. 00 each way if I buy it on the train.

Many of the commuters forking over $2 a ride don't make even that much. They can't afford a fare increase.

Signal73 My favorite newscaster. Wouldnt mind rolling over and smelling her morning breath every day

Talk about a take me now look! Wow, that is a hot one there.

I probably shouldn't get involved in this, but, 1st as said if you don't know what your talking about, you shouldn't open your mouth. The taylor law is bull****. The governor who never worked a hard day in his life, hires another liberal do nothing to put this law in effect, so he goes and deals with a bunch of liberal do nothings in the court system and make this law so unions can't go on strike. As one of the metro north union delagates stated at one of the press conferences, " Rosa Parks wasn't allowed to sit in the front of the bus,

she did breaking the law, and so they changed the law, bus drivers are not allowed to strike, we will and break the law, and then we will change that law. Now for the present governor he stated that police and firefighters didn't go on strike after working 2 or 3 years without a contract. We did want to go on strike, but know the outcome if we do. 1st 1/2 the city would burn down and what ever was left would be taken over without police presence, sort of like New orleans, we don't want that to happen to NY. in todays society most people are lazy and overwieght, so shut the buses down and get some exercise.

now for the biggest factor, the transit always goes first in negotiations, they set the pattern for the rest of the unions. The police and fire unions just settled in the last 2 months which means we're 3 years behind, the police and fire contracts expire in June of 06' so the TWU is setting the pattern of 1) no more waiting 3 years, settle on time or else

2) give us a fair wage or else

3) no more give backs

4) no more selling out the unborn

and this is why you see all the other unions backing them because the other 300,000 city employees know that the TWU is setting the pattern and the TWU is trying to do the right thing for everyone not just themselves.

in closing this is why we have unions so that we can have rights, if we didn't want to have a right to say anything we would work for no-union companies(scabs) like most of the people who are doing the complaining. Sorry for the long response "GO UNION"

This is why striking doesn't pay:

Average salary: $50,000

Daily pay = $50,000/260 or $192

They are being docked 2 times the daily rate for every day on strike: $384

On strike for three days now: $1,152

So they want an 8% increase per year (not likely to happen). Let's say they settle for 4% (very high in today's market). On an average salary of $50,000, that's an additional $2000 salary (first year).

After striking for only three days, they have to work a half a year at the higher rate JUST get back what they lost. If the strike lasts a week, they blow the entire first year's raise and get into the second year's raise.

correct, but the 4% raise isn't the issue anymore, the pension and benefits are. If you add up how much it would cost, I think they want 6% into benefit and pension fund. Which means 50,000 x 6% = $3,000 for 30 years

comes out to 90,000 plus they want you to work till 62 instead of 55 which means no collecting for 7 more years plus still paying the 6% another 18,000

total of 108,000 and that's if they don't get another raise for 30 years.

obviously if they get 3% raises for the next 30yrs that 108,000 could easily be well over 200,000. I'd be willing to give up 1,100 to get 200,000.

the media, the mta and the politicians only tell you want they want, all the uinon leaders representing the 300,000 city employees work all year round on this, in fact the TWU has been warning the mta about striking for the last 5 months. They bluffed and lost. by the way each member is losing 200 a day

the mta, city and state are losing 400 million. I think you spell his name TOUSSIANT, he's got my vote and I'm not even a bus driver, it's about time someone had the balls to stand up to all the Assh### politians. One last thing, the mta negotiators were all born with silver spoons in their mouths, private schools, country clubs, never worked a shovel or a hammer have no idea want a spark plug looks like. they've never ridden on a bus or train, their chauffered everywhere they go, they could care less about the people who ride the bus or the neighborhood they live in. If you don't live their life style your nothing to them.

Yeah, well I've been in a union too, so I guess that qualifies me to post.

Pensions, raise, 5 months of stike warnings - all BS in my eyes. The timing stinks and I hope the union members supporting the strike bear the burden of the timing of their decision. They had a choice to ruin their Christmas. The patrons, tourists, and other 'working class' people being affected didn't get the luxury of that choice.

Oh yeah, and all the silver-spooned people - they have other options so it is truly the working class that is being punished by the TWU.

Fire them all like the air traffic controllers. Let them reapply under new terms if they were a good employee. :p

because the air traffic controlers got fired. That allowed every municipality to work behind the scenes hiding money, claiming they can't give raises making up laws(taylor) so nobody could fight them, what kind of union are you in? please don't tell me some fast food joint, sounds that way. this is my last post on this subject, I can't lower myself to talk to ignorant liberals.

all of you probably feel the war in Irag is wrong to.

Geeze man, with all due respect it's hard to garner a lot of sympathy with the stable you have in your sig, lots of nice toys.

Is it outside the cities ability to bring in temporary drivers to fill the void (at least for the buses)... I'm sure after a fews days of the mess they are dealing with, most citizens would have no problem with it... ... ... ... ... ..... and if they do... well they can walk :-laf

The other unions support the strike cause they have to, whether they agree with with why the strike was called or not. If they want to be supported when they decide to go on strike themselves. To list one of your reason to strike as the raised retirment age for employees who don't even work there is not the smartest move. A great example of why unions are on the slide these days. There are other ways they can get there point across, I was in the union at one time but parted ways when they told me I was "working to hard and making the others look bad". To call a strike at this time of the year wasn't the best choice in my opinion.

" I was in the union at one time but parted ways when they told me I was "working to hard and making the others look bad"

That's why my father-in-law left the Carpenters union, that and you had to be careful you did not accidentally do some elses work. He had a job shut down one time because a (as in 1) camlock(concrete form hardware about the size of your hand) was found in a laborer's trash can that had just been flown, by a crane, to the ground. One whole day lost on a multi-million dollar job..... that was 40 years ago.

my intention was not to make anybody mad, or to argue with anyone.

everybody is entitled to their opinion, that's what makes this a great country.

but unfortunately there is always things going on behind closed doors and the other 300,000 other city employees fate will be sealed with the TWU deal.

I just hope they work out a deal by Monday or everyone will be walking again.

Now that's it, the first and last time I look in the other section, I'm sticking to 1st 2nd and 3rd gen threads. MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR
