shift problems

My 98. 5 just started shifting out of o/d for short periods of time, just enough to get a 200-500 RPM rise and then back to normal. This happens at highway speeds (50-70mph). Have searched the threads for similar problems and found one similar that a re-flash helped.

After driving it more the problem is more pronounced at 35-50 mph. It is constantly shifting at these speeds.

Has any one else heard of this? Is it a dirty sensor/switch or bad linkage?

The truck has 52K and is stock, no power upgrades etc. The fluid was changed at 35K and the truck doesn't pull trailers.

Help:confused:

I am experience the same problem. Mine is going in the shop for the 3rd time. First some wires by the front shock were shorting out. That repair helped for 2 days. then they said it was the pcm, put that in. That did help a lot, shifts in and out of od only occasionally. like once a day for a second or two. Tonight it started again, plus the abs/brake light came on and the speedometer stopped working. There going to hate to see me Monday AM. Spent $800 so far, but they are working with me for a new pcm is over $1100. Don't expect to pay for any more . The diesel tech has gone through all diagnostics, sensors, transmission. so I think their stumped. Can let you know what they find. Have 108000 on it.

hunting

There is a reflash 18-02-99 that may help. It addresses TCC hunt which is what you are likely having. Also separate the wires to the TPS from the harness and loom separately. On the truck which lost speedo, have the output speed sensors checked. There is one in extension housing and in rr differential. Cleaning the TPS with contact cleaner would be a good idea also. Hope this helps.

APPS

Try recalibrating the APPS. This sometimes helps.

1) unhook both battery grounds, some say for 5 min or 30 min.

2) Hook up battery's.

3) Turn the key to run, do not start

4) push go pedal slowly to the floor and back three times.

5) turn off key.

6) apps now calibrated

7) drive truck.

I have had this work for me on a 98. 5

the 18-02-99 will work also (best solution). Some dealers will say that 18-02-99 does not apply to your truck, have them put it in it will not hurt anything. You may have to insist on it.

:) The reset proceedure worked great. Left it depowered for an hour and repowered and no more problem. :D

It also cured my cruise control speed creep problem.

Thanks!!

Your cure saved a trip and abuse from the Dodge dealer who would have used the SWAG system to troubleshoot the problem.

I would respectfully request you avoid the generic reference, "stealer. " Please feel free to post experiences - good or bad - in detail.

Thank you.

great

Glad to help, the problem may re-occur so I would check on the reflash of the PCM for the more permenent fix.

Replaced the rear wheel sensor and that fixed the speedo, abs problem. Also calibrated the APPS as suggested. Been 4 days now and all is running well. Thanks for the help
