Coaming home from a nice highway drive I felt a hesitation. Kind of like a cruise control surge, only lasted a half a second. I looked at my gauges and trans temp was only 95 deg. I tapped the cruise off as I came up on my exit, pushed the clutch in to downshif from 6th to 5th and I'm not sure if I got it out of 6th or just as I hit neutral WHAM! It felt like my drivetrain was comming apart! Truck was shaking violently and felt like it was in 3rd gear or something because the tires kept tryine to lock and bounce.

I got to the side of the off ramp and even in neutral the truck was still in a gear, I dont know which but it is to high a gear to be able to move without stalling. It will not go in first or second and it seems to go in 3rd and 4th but I'm not sure, it feels like it but whether it is actually changing gear I dont know. The clutch still pushes in as normal and lets out and grabs at the same position it usually does as near as I can tell. WTH happened? There was no hint ever until that slight hesitation just before my exit and it was a feeling of a big gust of wind hitting you and then its gone. I am certain I did not down shift into neutral or a very low gear just to clear that up. As I said it was still in 6th or during the move from 6th to neutral. Any advice is appreciated.

I had dang near the same thing happen top me in the driveway backing up my log spitter! It ended up being the 6th gear syncro grenaded and wedging between the gears. Best of luck to you.

Well i was going about 55mph and and it sounded and felt awful. I'm sure the internals are screwed up but good. I was planning on switching to a built auto because of my knee. I'm not prepared to do that at this time but don't want to waste money rebuilding the 6 speed... Merry Christmas to me :{

Dean, sorry to hear about the transmission, that sucks. We auto guys would be glad to have you come over to our side of the tracks.

Thanks Tramplineman, anyone have a rough idea of what this could cost to repair if it was the 6th gear synchro? Been to busy to call around. The cost of a built auto I am aware of, I wonder how much extra cost is involved getting everything to work right, I'm not going to do a column shift I'll just do a ratchet shifter on a floor console.

DHayden sorry you lost your trans man ;) . But I have a couple of questions

1) What is your milage

2) Do you tow allot, and if so what kind of weight.

3) How long have you been running the Exhaust brake. Do you think this could have put a undue stress on the transmission?

Thanks, Rob

I wouldn't see the exhaust brake causing this, essecially if its the 6th gear cause you would rarely be in 6th while operating the brake. Did you notice any oil leaks? may have had oil seep out low enough to cause problems. I have fast coolers on mine with the window so I always get to check the level of the Amsoil whenever I want to. It may save me trouble later. Doesn't really matter, I am thinking a build auto conversionis in my future as well.

The truck is at 85,000 miles, I have had the exhaust brake since 40,000 miles. I don't think the ebrake had anything to do with it.

I do tow some but probably only 6 times a year from 7k to 18k pounds. Usually only 7k 18k once.

I have fast coolers also and have have a magnetic rod that goes into the oil bath. I have never noticed any particulate on the magnet. I also have a Trans temp gauge and I looked at it when I felt the surge and it was 95degree's. After the tear up and a quick stop the trans temp was at 120degrees but I stopped from 55 in less than half the length of the off ramp.

Thanks for the reply DHayden, I to have a six speed with fast coolers and temp gauge (first reading is @ 100* which I seldom ever see it above, unless I am towing or a real hot day and extended trip) and I tow about as much as you if not a little less, but about the same weight. I do not have a exhaust brake although I have thought about it a time or two. My milage is @ 78K right now, and no problems.

Any way good luck and keep us posted. I will be watching to see how yours resolves or if any others POP up. ;)

I have a pretty good auto you can put into the truck. Let me know. I have some $$$ into it but the price will be right if you need it?

It is in TX so it can be shipped out quick. I put a full DTT in my due to Twins and power around the 600hp range. Sorry this happen. Let me know, I can make some calls and try to help. I guessing get it out of the truck and pull the cover and see if is can be a quick/cheap fix.

Mike

I like to do things as right as I can the first time. I was looking into hopefully a built allison but a high end DTT is up there to. If your trans is a DTT please pm me details.
