now where was I... ... ... . OH YEAH,

LET THE BOMBING CONTINUE! :-laf

Good job man! So can you comment on the effects of running a . 020" over gasket? Did you lose any bottom end? How is midrange and top end? Is it any quieter or louder? How much smoke when it's cold?

Well heres the story... .....

I had to get . 010" of the head to make it straight so it's really only . 010" over now. I didn't feel any bottom end loss, however it really does seem to rev quicker. After I did the valve adjustment it was quieter and smoother than stock! I do have some white smoke when cold and not plugged in. Also I notice that it has that sweeter smell (like when you start up when it's cold out) all the time. Even when it warms up it still smells this way... ... . I would assume this is normal due to maybe not completely burning all the fuel with the lower compression?

Maybe Jim Fulmer or some others can answer this... ... .....

One other thing, the wife and I went to the movies tonight and when we came out and I started the truck (about 40 degrees this evening) the truck kinda sounded like my old '94 12V when it was cold... ... . kinda like a Huey helicopter WHOP,WHOP,WHOP,WHOP till it warmed up.

Sounds just like mine...

I had almost the same work done to my 96 several years ago. Had . 008 taken off and went with the . 020 gasket. Timing around 15-16 and I still have lots of white smoke (grid heaters working fine and all the time) when temps go below 40. I also notice the strong pungent (not sweet to me)burn your eyes smoke smell. I thought my preboost fuel setting was to rich or I needed more timing. Maybe this is a fact of life with lower compression. I also get the "whop-whop-whop" many times.

Yep, what Sled Puller says. But it's different if you are considering the valves and injector tips. . 020" - . 010" machining = . 010" for the valve and injector relationship to the piston crown. This comes into play if you're shaving the head and using a stock head gasket and you run higher RPM and/or plan on a cam, then you may need to flycut the pistons. Also when it comes to injector washers.

If you run . 020" and plan on 370s I would think you'll start having issues with the spray pattern being it barely shoots into the bowl adequately as it is. A thicker head gasket will make this even less ideal.

EDIt: Forgot I was in the 24v Forum, sorry about the 12v-speak :-laf

I guess I was thinking about it more like a gasser with the combustion chamber. I'm not sure what size the washers are on my injectors, but maybe I should go to a -. 010" washer? That should put it where it was, shouldn't it?
