It all depends on what you want to be able to do and what your diagnostic abilities are, and if your able to decipher the data. Yes you can get the cheapest one out their to read and clear codes, or you can get one that will give you generic data or you can get one that is the top of the line so you can see all manufacures enhanced data. If you have a hard to diagnose drivability problem you will need one that tells you enhanced data. I'm getting one for my lap-top soon it's made by auto enginuity. Their are many different options out their. You do get what you pay for.

I was looking at the AutoXRay (autoxray.com) becuase it is generally cheaper than a full unit like Snap-on or Matco, unless you can find a good price on Ebay.

The 5000 says it will look at the domestic vehilces back to the early 80s plus even new stuff with CAN up through 2008, or the 6000 which is like the 5000 but includes the non-OBD codes as well. I thougth that would be nice so you could look at ABS, Body Controller codes, ETC...

Anyone have any experience with Auto-X-Ray?

I work on more than just my vehicles so I thought these sounded good?

Edit: Nevermind about my questions. Just did a quick search after my post and everybody that seems to have one has good things to say about it... one thread even talked about it reading rail pressure, that would be nice. Should have done a search first.
