Who makes the best code reader/clearer for my 2001 Cummins Ram? Where can I purchase it and do we get a deal as members of the TDR forum?

Genos?

I bought a reader w/ all the connectors that has capbility to update from and download to a laptop. I've used on my '09 4500 to rread and reset a code and my wife's to read reset a code on her '03. I'm in for the evening and can give you the make/model tomorrow.

I can't say which reader is best because I don't know anyone else who has bought/used them. I like min the instructions are simple, the keys are big and logically labled and the display is sharp w/ easy to read text. It' mad for us old guys! :-laf

Here's what I did to find mine: I googled "OBD II Reader" or "OBD II Diangnostic Scanner", then campared features and prices acroos the spectrum and found the one or two I liked. I copied make/mode of those two, then google them separeately and narroed it doen to this order: Best Festures, Best Price w/ shipping. This is where there is some wiggle. No haggle, no sale! Yous should become very knowledable about scanners in a day or two. Please share w/ us what you decide.

Finally, If you don't need to do different vehciles, I'd recommend a Smarty. I have one on the 4500 and I really like it. I have an opinion about sharing applications on other vehicles... you hope it don't get locked onto a frineds vehcle. I believe each time you download, there is an opportunity for a software glitch or hardware problem. Just an option.

Yous can check the vendors on the TDR to find who may sell them... just ask how much somehting is first, then after you get a quote, work w/ that number to get better price (including sshipping).

Long answer to a short question, hugh?

Take care and kep us informed.

I found out a friend who owns an "Ace Alternator" shop has one. I'm going to drive over and try it out next week. Auto zone has them from $89. 00 up to $200. 00. I just want to see if I have any codes and clear them if there is. I appreciate the replies!

Oh yeah, Auto Zone will check, print and clear codes. I like having one for on the road diagnosis/repair.

I have an INNOVA 3140 Scanner/Diagnostic Tool. I reads codes and performs engine running diagnostic testing.

I bought a superchip chip that was not good as a chip because the info was reloaded back into the unit but works great for reading the codes and clearing them for $5. 00 works for me. For some reason on my 98. 5 not all cheap code reader will clear the code, my boy has a $200 one that always works even the scan guage will not clear the codes, it will read them but not clear them Scan people where not help when I called.
