was reading that info from geno's garage

and i am looking at a 2nd gen truck right now, thinking about possibly purchasing it

did some of these calif trucks come w a cat?

do you have to smog them?

thought all diesels were exempt

my '00 R/T is OBD-II and it is a pain when it comes to high performance

man, i found a truck i like, still have to check and make sure it does not have a 53 block in it (no, i have not even seen the thing in person, but out here we dont have a bunch of 98 215 trucks to chose from)

so what is the scoop with the OBD-II????

thanks, don

i dont think the odbII will mean anything for you. is this a 12v or 24v? the 94-98 12v came with a cat. the 24v's came with a resonator. emissions laws vary from place to place. you can take it to a muffy shop with the pipe cut (cat) and as long as the guy cant tell there was a cat, he can weld a strait pipe in there. the 215 truck must be a 5spd then?

yes, itsa 5 sp - quad cab, long bed, PW7 white like i like n all...

if i can build my own ex for it and not have to worry about smogging it or having check engine lights coming on because of it then no biggie

with that emission system tho i think there is a sniffer and lights and codes

no???

Nope, fortunately no emissions sensors on the 12V. Not totally sure about the California trucks which featured EGR in addition to the catalytic converters all other 2nd Gen 12 valves had (except for early '94s).

Just a heads up--If you are required to have an emissions check done on the truck, the tech will probably bust you if you don't have a cat, because there is a spot on the builder's data plate on the driver's side of the timing gear case that says "catalyst no. xxxxxxx". That's how I'm screwed here in lovely Colorado Springs, where they don't even require emissions testing for gassers anymore, but still have a yearly test for diesels . . . #@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

Guess I need to move away from this stupid place, or at least figure out how to somewhat legally register my truck somewhere outside the "clean air" zone.

It might be worth trying to figure out a way to gut the cat and fit it to whatever exhaust your going to use, that way at least it should pass a visual inspection.

BTW, my truck ('98 215hp) has a 53 block also.

Good luck,

CTD12V

Edit: Oh, and when the cat was off, there was no lights, or codes, or any of that crap to worry about. The cat is basically just stuck on there as a stand alone unit and expected to do it's job until you start getting the symptoms of a plugged cat; there are no sensors or diagnostics or anything like that, at least not on my truck, but it wasn't built for CA either.

thanks for the info

wouldnt doubt it if annual insp for diesels were to be implemented in cal within the next few years...

i see the truck in person saturday, if it is not a 53 i dont know how i will keep myself from purchasing it...

i think it is overpriced for a 9 year old truck w/100k on it but its not like i have a lot to choose from out here (they almost always have a auto trans and the few that do have sticks are always "worked")

thanks again

The CA '98's did have a Cat and they also had OBD II and an EGR system. At least some sensors were associated with the EGR. The automatic version was 180 Hp stock. As of about 9 months ago, no smog inspection was required when transferring title. That is subject to change nearly any time. When I installed the 4" exhaust on my '98, I included a cat from an '06 which is 4". Required some tweaking to fit.

Here in this part of Arizona, smog inspections are done at state-contracted facilities. Inspections for my truck take about 30 minutes and cost about $28. Your car/truck will pass or it won't. The inspection stations do not do any repairs. The printed report that they give you can help you troubleshoot if you fail. The only problem I have ever had was getting behind an old Ford non-turbo diesel from Arkansas being tested for AZ registration. It was filthy, and the techs couldn't get the test system pipes and filters fully clean. I still passed.

When I lived in California many years ago, at the beginning of smog inspections, the inspectors were also repair shops. It was very difficult to find a shop that would do just the inspection. They wanted to do the inspection as a part of a $400 tune-up. Really annoying. Has that changed?

Matt Shumaker:

Yep, they now have "inspection only" stations. Still no annual/semi-annual inspections on diesel rigs and no inspection when transferrring owners. I keep expecting that to change. On gassers there's pass/fail rating and some vehicles can be certified as "gross poluters" and really screws up registration.
