OK Guys,

If I'd had the sense to do the key cycle instead of the trip odometer button, I'd have gotten the right code, not the engine hours

What I got was P0148 with no associated codes. It occured after a long uphhill pull on I-80 in PA. No other symptoms (like rough running, loss of power, etc. ), just normal operation. It idles fine. The reviews of this code on the site are mixed. Some suggest a fuel filter change (mine was changed 6K miles ago at the beginning of this trip). Others warn of a dead truck on the side of the road, a destroyed CP3, ect.

And here I am in Milton, PA at the Jellystone Park wondering what to do. Find a Dodge dealer? Just start home and hope? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks to all,

Mike

I googled chrysler code P0148 and it said it was "a fuel delivery error". Someone who knows more about this can tell you whether this is important or not. Sorry I can't help ya more.

Its a VERY generic code, could be fuel filter or even just a glitch like I have had before one time. Theres really no specifics on this code unless you get some other ones with it. I would check your fuel filter but other than that I wouldnt be to concerned unless it or some others pop up agin.

From the manual.
  • any fuel leaks?
  • Stuck Fuel control actuator(don't know where that is)
  • If the rail pressure is NOT higher at 2000 RPM than at idle replace fuel pressure sensor.
  • check the rail pressure relief valve
  • check fuel return line for blockage.
The next step is the lift pump flow test. I can't find the book procedures but if you open the fuel filter drain and bump the starter and you get fuel flow I would guess that your lift pump was ok.

All other steps require a scan tool and getting into the valve cover and looking for fuel leaks

Day After

Took the chance and did 300+ miles today from Milton, PA to N. Stonington, CT. Had no problems. About 40 miles of travel in CT was stop and go plus the rest was 60 - 65 mph. I would guess that the computer threw the code due to the long uphill pull in PA. I should have dropped it back to 55 and downshifted to 5th, but I went at the grade in 6th at 65 mph. No loss of revs or speed, but the downshift probably would have been the better option.

I'll take the truck in to Bonneville & Son when I get back to see what's what.

Thanks for the responses; they were appreciated.

P0148 Follow-up

Well, I got the truck home OK. About halfway home from our last stop in CT, I began to hear a droning noise at highway speed and a vibration when slowing down.

Took the Ram into Bonneville & Son in Manchester, NH. They had it for a day, identified a failing fuel pump and binding rear drive shaft U-joints. Both were replaced under the power train warrantee. Truck is bone stock, except for a dealer installed Jake Brake, so no questions asked.

The truck now has the new, in-tank fuel pump and new U-joints and sounds happy again.

Thanks to those of you who responded to this.
