Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) OBD2 code readers

Got my first DTC and I need to pick up an OBD2 code reader. I was hoping to get advice as to just how many functions I really need and how many I don't. I see them on Ebay starting @ $50 and I've seen them in automotive joints from $140 to $300. What functions/brands/models do you guys recommend? Thanks

With your 02 you can see the DTCs by cycling the key 3 times quickly. The codes will show through the odo read-out. You will only need a reader for clearing codes or reading codes for emission compliance and non performance faults.

I was of the impression that not all codes are accessible via the odometer. If all performance codes are, as you say, accessible via the odometer, then the ones I pulled off it must be my only ones. Thanks
