I have a question regarding obdII compter systems. If I pull the - battery cable will that clear the codes in the system. I was under the impression that it would. But a friend of mine said that some of the trouble codes cannot be cleared unless you have a scan tool. What is the real story??

As far as I know on all OBDII veheches you have to have a scan device or software to clear codes. Most auto parts stores will check them for you. They may clear them for you too.

I was able to clear the APPS codes I had by disconnecting the batteries for a few hours. I have reset the codes so many times I am becoming a pro at erasing them. I did use a Snap On MT2500 scan tool to erase the last round of APPS codes.

After having a few codes on other cars I finally bought an OBDII scanner. They are getting less expensive all the time, mine is an Actron CP9135 and it reads and clears codes and was around $80 online. They have one that is even less, around $60 but it doesn't display the code explanation, only the number and then oyu have to look it up. Saves going to the shop just to be told that your gas cap is loose, that will set a code on a gas car. It also reads emissions readiness although with our trucks that doesn't matter now does it? I used it when I bought this truck to see if there were any pending codes in the computer that were not yet a CEL code.
