occasional hard start/long crank time

Every once in a while I'll have to crank for 2-3 seconds before it fires up. It acts like it just isn't getting any fuel. I've had this happen 4-5 times now (have 5K on the clock). I can't find any pattern, sometimes it's after I haven't driven it in a couple days, sometimes its 10 minutes after I last drove it. Might just be me, but it's quite annoying - makes me miss my 2000 that fired up every time with just a little more than a bump of the starter.



Anyone else have this happen? (Sorry, no guages yet)

Looks like the new in-tank fuel pump is going to rear its ugly head. At least it won't take out the CR pump.

I get that about the same as you, WOT. I'm afraid to ask or tell the dealer. They may make it worse.



Hopefully someone will figure it out.

This is not a problem. Depending on the position of the crank and cam position sensors at the last shutdown, crank times can vary wildly. These engines just won't start as fast as a VP-44 or P7100 truck.



My 1985 carbureted Bronco II would fire within about 1/4 crank rotation every single time. I would literally just bump the starter and that thing would fire. My 1996 Ranger with DIS and fuel injection would take at least 2 full rotations to fire.



In terms of starting, jerk pump is to carburetor as HPCR is to fuel injection.

Sounds about right to me. It is still a lot better than a Ford with the huie (sp)

Try changing where you purchase your fuel. I switched from Kwik Trip to Fleet Farm and I swear the truck starts quicker. Just a thought.

I buy my fuel at Flying J (very high turnover), change my fuel filter every 7. 5k miles, and use Stanadyne Perf Formula and mine does it as well. It's normal starting operation.
