I would like to point out that there is a diffrence in a "scanner" and a "code reader". A code reader just pulls codes and has the ability to erase them. A scanner has live data readings as well as the ability to record on some.

That's the way I see it - and I assume the scanner type does ALL the same things the reader types do, give error code readings and analysis, erase codes, PLUS the live readings?

I'll keep my eyes open for a decently priced scanner type...

Yes I also agree that there is a difference in the two types and functions. I went with the reader/eraser because it was what I needed. I have a friend that teaches automotive tech at a local college and have borrowed his $3000 Snapon scanner and it is certainly an amazing tool to play with, being able to watch the engine and drivetrain functions as they occur is pretty cool, but I think that most guys will probably be fine with a reader to point them in the right direction. Most of the problems I foresee myself having are more of the nuisance type and my reader does a pretty good job of that. Of course the price of these things keeps falling so that in a short while they will all be affordable to even the most casual user like me.

I work at a local Community College, and yes the Span_on Scan tool is great. But it has its shortcomings too. It will not communicate with the Kelsey Hayse ABS controller. The best scan tool is only available at the dealer (I was told).

WELL, it's all Chad's fault - I just ordered the Actron 9145, wanted the streaming data feature, and figured it's worth the extra cost...

Dang you Chad - keep quiet on your next purchase! :-laf :-laf

Sorry gary ... LOL

I think you will like it !!!

I was looking for the cheap way of ditching my CEL and getting the codes Friend has a Snap on jobby that you plug in while your driving and it has live data with intermitten shots for you to go back and look at Pretty cool but it was probly pretty $$$ also .

Tire Correction

Will any of these scanners allow me to insert new tire revolutions per mile so I don't need to take it to the *******???

I don't think so - at least the copy of the manual for mine I downloaded made no mention of programming ability - sure would be nice if it did tho'...

Been looking at getting a scanner/reader too. Haven't seen any mention of AutoXray brand EZ-Scans. Any comments on them??? Like their upgrade via internet function.

I think a DRB tool is needed to change the tire revolution setting. Most repair shops have these. Just have one of our big trucks repaired & the tech said he could change setting on my Dodge with it.

Anyone with a 99. What do you use to read codes? The 99 doesn’t do the key on off thing. Vehicles 8800 lbs GVWR did not have to be OBD 11 compliant that year.
