EGT on the rise

Hey Piers, pump recalibration question

One of the noises happens right after the engine cranks and idles... . I get this LOUD screaching sound for about 5-10 seconds and it stops abruptly. I'm thinking alternator or even the belt slipping and making noise from the increased load on the alternator right after startup... . This noise has only happened twice since May... and neither of them were on a cold-start.

The other noise is a faint 'ticking' when the truck is at idle... the noise increases in speed in a direct proportion to engine speed... . but never gets louder. Oil level is full and is really clean (Pennzoil 15W40 heavy duty diesel stuff... with PureBase)... . actually it's cleaner than my old gasser ever was and the oil has ~2k miles on it... due for change in 500 miles or so.

All my exhaust manifold gaskets look good too.....

Anyone, anyone, anyone? ~Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Thanks in advance!

HoleshotHolset,

I get loud screeching noise on my Freightliner every time it rains on first start up(actually first take off). Apparently water drips down on the belt, but the liner hood is slanted down a lot.

Also I believe tight (or is that loose) belt can screech on start up.

Ticking sound could be bad sign that bearings are going out.

But I think your valve(s) in your injector pump are sticking a little.

Try running diesel injector cleaner or diesel fuel conditioner thru fuel tank.

Hole, Dump a quart of Marvel Mystery oil in the tank... see if the tic goes away... I doubt that them spark plug wires are arcing!

Mike

DO NOT DRINK THE OIL! Does red oil go with fish or beef?

2 things:

The screech could be your starter staying engaged. I haven't had it happen but that is a common symptom.

You can go a lot longer on an oil change. 6,000 miles - no problem. Like you said, a lot cleaner than your gasser.

Coould the ticking be the 'overhead'?

hey guys, could the ticking noise be his valve lash adjustment being too loose? I am a relative newbie to this engine, but we used to have to 'run the overhead' on our old NTC 350's about once a year (@100,000 miles), and I've spent more than a few hours getting splashed with hot oil adjusting the valves on small block chevies trying to get the tick outa the valvetrain. Just a thought... ... ... ..... enquiring minds wanna know :D

Ticking

The ticking noise you refer to is most likley your lift pump doing its job and is perfectly normal. I think you are on the right track as far as the screaching noise and the engine accesories.

I wish I did own a Frieghtliner... . that would be NICE! I can't wait for the day that I own a 12-liter inline-6 Cummins!! :D :D

I hope it isn't the starter..... that's more BOMB $$ that I'll have to misappropriate.

Injector cleaner/fuel additive..... well, I have yet to even add any of that stuff since I bought her... ...

Marvel Mystery Oil? Can we actually dump that into the tank and not ruin stuff? I've heard of folks with 'older' diesels doing this... but not the 'newer' stuff. Oh yeah, since MMO is red... I'd drink it with red meats and leave #2, JP-4, and gasoline for fish and white meats.

Valve adjustment. . "... yeah that sounds good. " ~ Ladies' Man

I want to see someone do it before I do it... . plus I want all them nifty tools too. Any volunteers? I'd like to check my timing too...

I'd really hate to think that I'm making 'enough power'... as I need LOTS more..... :D :D

Thanks a million for all the responses!

Matt

Hey HH, have you had the misfortune of driving a freightliner? I am just about to get back in mine and drive it back to work. They are COMPLETE PIECES OF I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER !!!!!!!!!! That thing is the most noisy, bouncy slow piece of junk I have ever driven and it is brand new. Even the '73 KW I used to drive was better than that. My second gen ram is pure heaven compared to my first gen, and my first gen was heaven compared to the KW, so you can see where that leaves the Frieghtbraker.

I was using the brand 'Freightliner' to represent any class 8 truck. I've been in Mack's and Kenworth's and haven't really made a preference... . but it's what's under the hood that I'm mostly interested in. I have a friend that owns his own little trucking company... . all new Mack's... . I just gotta get my CDL permit... then he'll let me drive 'em! :D :D E7-460hp of inline-6 diesel power!

Matt

Buy the way the proper name is" FRIEGHTSHAKER" for reasons that any one who has had the pleasure of driving one will tell you!! had the joy for 3 yrs:eek:

haha, that's funny stuff!

I've yet to drive one, but my chances of driving a class 8 truck are kinda slim seeing as I don't have a CDL... .

I'll probably end up driving a few new Mack's though when I do... it pays to have connections!

Matt

Oh boy..... the truck still runs good... . I hope the pump isn't eating itself.

The tick is very quiet... you have to really listen to hear it... sometimes I can't even hear it...

Matt

I wouldn't worry about the tick. Iinquired about this some time ago when I bought my truck. I was new to the Cummins at the time and pretty much every comment I got was that's its normal, just the pump working.

I haven't heard mine tick all summer. I noticed it last winter quite a few times. Maybe I am immune to the noise now ;) I also use a fuel conditioner almost every tank now as well. I don't know if it's cooler weather, or the conditioner.

Drive it till it breaks :D

Ryan

About the tick.

If I have my rear extended cab window open, I can hear the tick also. it's bouncing from the the space in between the box and and cab. Window closed, it's not there unless I'm standing outside.

Bu the screach I heard just as the lift pump died was awfull and I don't think that could happen very often, if at all more than once. It's like a motor seizing.

Yeah, I want to sign up for the "No bad noises Club"... . I don't want to hear any foul noises coming from my engine compartment... . not for a while at least!

I've driven the truck pretty hard..... and so far it has shrugged it all off as if I were driving it normally. (knock on birdseye maple... )
