Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Odd sounding exhaust

I need help with a problem. On my 2001 cummins im getting a very loud popping sound out the exhaust and i have no clue what the problem is. Iv have the injectors tested readjusted the valves but it still does it. When im driving down the road it goes away then comes back wheni slow back down. Please help#@$%!

Have you checked the computer for malfunction codes?



Have you replaced your fuel filter lately?

its does have blue smoke at idel. i dont haveany fault codes and the fuel filter i dont remember. i think about 5000 miles ago i got it replaced.

Could this "popping" possibly be the symptom of a failing lift pump or a failing VP44 injection pump?



If yes, then Steven, maybe you could start by replacing the fuel filter (just to rule that out) and also install a fuel pressure gauge (or at least a low fuel pressure warning light kit).

i will replace it again. power wise it doesnt feel like i have anypower loss and that is what is makeing it odd to me. my fuel pressure dosent go below 15 psi

Could also be a burnt exhaust valve, a cam lobe starting to go out, or maybe a bent push tube. the push tube or cam lobe you probably would have noticed when you adjusted the valves though.

I just noticed in the Dodge Powertrain Diagnotics Procedures Guide, they indicate the MAP (a. k. a. turbo boost pressure) sensor calibration should be checked when a vehicle is experiencing "Backfire" or "Popback. " Since the MAP sensor calibration can't be checked without a $6000 DRB III scan tool, you can replace it outright to see if that cures the problem.



The OEM Dodge part number should be 5017791AA for your truck, and it's available online for about $116 + shipping at MoparPartsAmerica. An aftermarket version made by Airtex is available from Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto for about $108 + shipping. BTW, if you search google.com, you can usually find 5% off discount coupon codes for RockAuto.com.

Are any of the exhaust manifold bolts missing?

no there not broke. had it off not that long ago changing the manifold.

I had a "ticking" sound coming from the exhaust and thought the worst. A good friend of mine (who knows our trucks inside and out) sugessted to kick the tailpipe while at idle when the sound was present to see if the "ticking" altered or stopped. (I thought he was crazy) When I tried it, it stopped for a few (5-10 seconds) and returned. He told me it was probably the baffle inside the muffler starting to fail or a piece of slag hitting the inside of the tailpipe from welding on the turndown exhaust tip. maybe give it a shot?
