I back my 1996 truck into my driveway and there's an outlet there .I was wondering if I could hook a small battery charger up to the hot and ground lines of the trailer plug and would that charge the batteries with out hurting any thing ?

No not really odd. Just keep in mind that there is a loss along the small wires used between the plug and the battery. (No reason you can't upgrade the wire size.) So it will maintain the batteries, but, charging will take longer than if you connected directly to the battery. Just double check that it does work by measuring the voltage at the batteries with the charger turned on. (It should work unless something isn't hooked up.) By small charger you mean less than 6 amps?

Yes a small charger ,maybe 4 amps at most .I let it set 2 months and the batteries didn't like that in the cold and damp weather . I usually pull them out at the end of summer and wash them off so the tops are clean . Didn't do it this year .

This is what I put on trucks that will sit for long periods or be exposed to cold temps.................by cold I mean actual cold, not the pitiful excuse for cold that you get in California. :-laf

You can install it under hood and make the cord accessible or you can do something like this....
