Thinking about installing a gen 2 in my gen 1

This is on the 1992 dump in my truck profile. The odometer hasnt worked since I purchased this truck but the speedometer works ok. Before I start ripping into the instrument cluster, could this be caused by something else? Such as a non existant crank sensor or something I would have no idea? Kind of hard to keep track of service and mileage when that thing sits in the same spot all the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not familiar with your specific problem but I have noticed numerous posts about speedos that do not work and suggestions. I would try a few searches.

little plastic gear in the instrument cluster gets brittle and crisp, and then eventually the shaft in it just spins.

these guys market replacement parts. I've not tried'em. My son's 1st-gen is getting a whole-new instrument cluster, to include new speedometer/odometer, so we won't need to do the remove/replace thing.

I ordered the gears from those guys after I tried to replace the blue gears with ones from the junk yard but the junk yard ones kept breaking. The new gears work great and I think they will last a long time. Thanks for the link.

There are many many pages on this subject. Do a search for the key words odometer under the user name Mysteryman. You will find much info.

I know this as I did that a few weeks ago. Mine has started intermitently working. It means it is time. :(
