Guys, I have been reading a post about changing over to the metric instrument panel, and saw what I think is a contradiction about the mileage. My odometer has faded to where it is difficult to read, and I am seeking info about replacing it or the entire cluster. Where is the mileage stored? I saw a reply that stated it was stored in the PCM, in which case my replacement odometer should read the correct mileage, but I also saw a reply that reported that it would read what was on the replacement, which would mean the mileage is stored in the odometer or instrument panel. Can I get clarification on this? It is for a 2000 year Dodge truck.

Does anyone know if the diesel cluster is unique, or will the gas cluster work? Also, how year specific are these clusters, such as a 99 gasser working on a 2000 diesel? Can the odometer be changed as an individual piece, or is it "married" to the cluster?

Not sure

Not sure about some, but I think the ALL of the diesels have a tachometer, and they all say "Diesel Fuel Only" I know some of the gassers dont have a tach. Only a speedo, battery gauge, and fuel gauge. The rest is idiot lights.

Tim the milage is for sure stored in the cluster... gauge guys can power them up on a bench and set to whatever they like, honest shops will want to see your old cluster to match it or some kind of recent paperwork for your truck with miles to go by.

as for the fadeing milage reading I am facing the same problem, I have not found a shop in the seattle area that can handle changing it out for a new one, it is soldered into the gauge board.

I read somewhere last year when messing with mine. . I think here?, that a guy can mail one in somewhere and for around 5 bills they will rebuild a cluster.

One has to think there's a lucrative cottage industry out there. :-laf

I know first hand the old ones were pretty easy to mess with.

well I called the number. . to replace the dead odometer is $230, plus $17 shipping back and is a 3 day turnaround... I will do mine next spring.

Thanks for the help! I know where to look now. I may take a crack at it myself, since I used to work on tv 's and electronics, waaaay back when people used to fix those things!
