Ok, this has me confused. My odometer and trip meter have quit, but the speedometer still works. I've been driving my '90 3/4 ton 3 speed auto like this awhile, and it really irks me 'cause I can only tell when to change the oil by the oil color and change interval. It's got 290,000 miles showing, and I just use it around the house. But now my '92 auto has done the same thing, and it's only got 154,000 on it. I don't want to drive it that way, as I've never really abused it, and don't want to start now. Any one know what the deal is, or am I just overlooking the obvious and the speedometer has to be replaced?

if you look around there are spedo shops that repair them

I have replaced a couple in dodges & looked at them when I had it apart I think there is a lil motor that drives the odometer I know that sounds weard but it looked like there was a motor in there none the less

the spedo uses a magnet driven by a cable rotating inside the the pivot point of the pointer which is sprung to 0 & the odo trip would be gear driven or motor driven

later ones dont even have cables OBD2 has to see every function as the guages do & allot of functions there are no guages for using a grounded or returned 5 volt reference signal or an input variable frequency signal often before the guage sees it than the freuency output from the ECU is sent to the spedo / fuel; guage / temp guage? whatever. which is electricaly driven

it happens quite often on many diferent cars & trucks that the odo & trip go out & the spedo still works

you need to replace or have it repaired

thats my 2. 5 cents ;)

My 92 did the same thing at about 120,000 miles . The local dealer wanted about $ 350. 00 dollars for a exchange speedometer and that was me taking it out and leaving it with them (yea right) for a few days. A member here found out from another member about a place in Houston that can fix the odometer . So I took it out and took it to them and they fix it for around $150. 00 to $175. 00 dollars while I waited . You can mail your speedometer to them and they will fix it and mail it back ~~~~ United Speedometer 5335 Bingle Rd. Houston , TX . 713-690-1230 or 713-690-2755 ~~~~ They said some electronics had burn up in the speedometer . I will always wonder if the dealer was going to send it to United Speedometer and have it fix and mark the price up ????????

the speedometer/odometer is electric driven. there is a small plastic gear that drives the odometer from the speedometer gears. it breaks thus the odometer stops. I have found a post on here, I think, of someone who makes them for about 35$. Or possibly take it to a watch repair shop that can make small gears. the gear is about 3/8 in diameter, 20 teeth. you can get to it by removing the speedometer cluster then taking it apart.

I have the same problem in my 92. if you can find out where to get the gear let me know. I was going to just go to a wrecking yard and pull a speedo and rob the parts I needed...

Good LUCK (RHancock) . If you find a wreck truck with the speedo in it you better buy the whole d@m truck cause every salvage yard I call'd (that could speake the English) just laugh at me . There are none to be had in the Houston area and if you do find one they will only sell you the WHOLE cluster .

Speedometer/Odometer Plrblem Update

I have the same problem with my 90 truck. I posted a help request on the 1st Gen Forum about this. I had replaced the speedometer with one from a salvage yard and it worked for awhile then the same problem again. I took my speedometer apart and there is a little electric motor that turn a little blue gear that works the odometer/tripmeter. Remove the two phillips head screws and remove the motor very careful - the gear is just inside the motor. My gear was stripped and brittle. I though I counted 19 teeth but I noticed another TDR Member said it has 20 teeth. I have two heads with the same problem. I think this is a age related problem-the gear becomes brittle and strips. Mine litterly crushed in my fingers. I hope we can find somewhere too buy only the gears. Thats all we need. I hope this helps to answer your question. ::::::::::BHerndon 1990 1 ton duelly reg. cab 160 hp auto all stock. NAME IS BLACKY 1999 1 ton duelly quad cab RED 235hp 5 speed 3:54 gears also all stock. Don't want to mess up my warranty. 57,000 original miles-bought new. Oo.

Source for that annoying little gear!

I think I may of found a source for that gear, I haven't ordered one from them yet but plan on it. If anyone orders one before me please post their results here; as I know there are a lot of us with this problem.

Thanks ! :) Oo.

That Gear!

Well I went & ordered 2 gears; one for my broke odometer, the other for a spare. Will update this ASAP when I get my gears.

Well, what did you find out?? At 343,000+mi. I can't stop counting now... :-laf

OOPS!

Sorry about the update... it works!

When you go to the link in my post above it will show two gears; 20 tooth & 16 tooth, you'll most likely need both. When you go into the speedo head be careful, because you can mess up the synchronization between the trip/odometer & speedometer. Other than that it was fairly simple fix.

So... ...

What's the verdict? I would be glad to pay $50 for the gears as opposed to sending it off for $200 or so to get fixed. That $150 is 3 tanks of fuel.

Thanks for the information yall. I just ordered 3 of the little 20 tooth gears since we have 3 trucks here at the shop that use that system. As common as failure seems to be, I figured 3 gears at $25 each was a great deal. Sure beats paying to have it sent off, then having to wait to have it repaired. The gears will be here Monday and I can get the truck back on the road. As always, I have got to say the $35 a year spent on TDR membership is money VERY well spent with all the resources this membership organization and its members have here. Thanks for the help yall!
