Odometer repair

mysteryman's questions in another thread prodded me enough to get out & fix my dead odometer a second time. There are 2 gears that die in the odometer, a planet carrier & a planet gear. The gears are made of a blue plastic and don't hold up to time. Here are some pic's.

The white lines are cracks & the white teeth are missing and painted in for clarity. The bottom pic is of the new gears.

My odometer quite at 306510. The speedometer works, but I have no odometer. Would be nice to have this working once again... . we'll see.

It can be spendy @ $25. 00 a gear and you'll most likely need two of them.

I would much rather send mine to a company that rebuilds them and would have the knowledge to look things over and replace/repair all that is needed as opposed to me 'tearing" into it and have no clue what I'm looking at.



Perhaps a warranty to accompany the rebuild... ... ... ...

Thanks Paychk. Both the 16 and 20 tooth gears were cracked. I purchased two of them through the link you posted above Chrystler Dodge. The ordering process went fine. Kinda pricey for something so... cheap looking.



I just want to throw something extra in for others who may wonder the same thing. This was the first time I took apart a gauge cluster. One thing that I was concerned about was removing the speedometer needle because it didn't budge when I pulled on it and it looked pretty fragile. Rather than apply more pressure, break it, then find out that it wasn't the way I should have tried to remove it I did a search and found that others have had similar concerns when trying to remove the needles from various vehicles. After reading, I'm sure if I applied more pressure it would have popped off; however, one tip that I tried just to be safe was using two spoons (with spoon buldge facing the speedometer) to apply even pressure to pop it off. It worked out fine.



The rest was pretty straightforward.



When I got the truck the odometer was out. Then the speedometer worked erratically and went out a few months later. With the odometer working now, do I assume that the vehicle speed sensor(VSS)/vehicle distance sensor (VDS) is not a part of the speedo problem?

Wanted to update this with another source of the odometer gears, the prices are a little better than the places listed above, I haven't ordered from this new one so buyer beware:

Replacing the gears is certainly not for the faint at heart... You need a light hand and start the the screws back in the same thread that they came out of. .

Cross threading causes the plastic to fracture... You also want to keep your fingers off of the dial face !

I have done dozens and dozens of these... Anyone that would rather have someone else do the repair is welcome to send them to me. . Email me for details. . Put "Dodge speedo" in the subject line...
